Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

This second edition of Manual of Endocrinology and Metabolism presents the most Current developments in the management and treatment of endocrine and metabolic disorders in the infant, child, and adult.
It provides a useful overview of new basic data snd the most recent therapeutic options. Although the approach is primarily diagnostic and therapeutic, simplified contemporary pathophysiology is often used to aid the physician's understanding of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. This manual is a brief, detailed text that reinforces concepts for the specialist yet is geared primarily for the student, house officer, and practitioner.
It is unique in that it is a collaboration of experts in both pediatric and adult endocrinology, whereas most other endocrinology texts cover only one age group. It therefore allows the reader flexibility in selecting chapters that relate to a particular specialty. In the second edition, I continue my commitment to integration of the basic sciences with practical diagnostic evaluations and specific treatment modalities of endocrine disorders. Within this framework,
I have retained the criginal ten main .sections and have added chapters on endocrine radiology and molecular endocrinology; some chapters on metabolism have been deleted. These difficult but important decisions were made to keep the book portable while maintaining high quality and current information. All areas have been significantly updated or totally rewritten to include new and relevant research.

George B. Kauffman and Laurie M. Kauffman, California State University, Fresno, georgek@csufresno. edu On December 10, 1977, in Stockholm’s Konserthus (Concert Hall), Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustav awarded one half of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Rosalyn Yalow of the Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx, New York “for the development of radioimmunoassays [RIA] of peptide hormones.” He presented the other half to Roger Guillemin of the Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA and Andrew V. Schally of the Veterans Administration Hospital, New Orleans, LA, both of whom used RIA extensively, “for their discoveries concerning the peptide hormone production of the brain.” Yalow was the second woman to receive this honor (Gerty Therese Cori and her husband Carl Ferdinand Cori had received half of the prize in 1947 “for their discovery of the course of the catalytic conversion of glycogen”), but she was the first American-educated woman to win the prize. Eugene Straus, M.D., a gastroenterologist, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Digestive Diseases at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, and Yalow’s longtime friend and colleague, begins his “biographical memoir” with her sudden stroke on January 1, 1995, when she was taken to a hospital, where, soiled with blood and unrecognized, she was “dumped” as a charity case onto another hospital. He then contrasts her slow and ultimate recovery from her crippling illness with her earlier, productive years that he chronicles in empathic but objective detail based on his own contact with her and extensive interviews with family and colleagues.

Cancer Drug Traced to Tumor
Fluorescent probe elucidates pathway into cells Back to Volume 09, number 04 Issue Printer-Friendly Format Article published Winter 2000 Email this story to a friend
S cientists at the University at Buffalo and Tulane University have, for the first time, optically tracked in real-time the pathway of one of the most widely used cancer drugs linked to a peptide hormone carrier as it is being taken up by a human breast-cancer cell.
The investigation-funded by a $1,016,254 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research-demonstrates the power and utility of new photonic materials developed at UB that have allowed scientists this first-ever, bird's-eye view of the cellular pathway of the chemotherapeutic agent.
The compound used was AN-152, a combination of the commonly prescribed chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, which is linked to an LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone) analog that targets only cells with LH-RH receptors on them. This makes the compound specific to cancers of the ovary, breast, cervix and prostate, and possibly others, as well.
AN-152, now in animal trials, was first synthesized by Andrew V. Schally, PhD, MD, 1977 Nobel laureate in medicine and director of the Endocrine, Polypeptide and Cancer Institute of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans, and Attila Nagy, PhD, associate professor of medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, both of whom participated in the study.

Stulecie ustanowienia Nagrody Nobla

Marian Fuks
Polska chlubi siê swoimi piêcioma laureatami (Maria Sk³odowska-Curie, Henryk Sienkiewicz, W³adys³aw Reymont, Czes³aw Mi³osz, Lech Wa³êsa i Wis³awa Szymborska). ¯ydzi rozsiani w kilkudziesiêciu krajach maj± te¿ powód do dumy. ¯e s± ¯ydami i to polskiego pochodzenia, w ogólnie dostêpnych encyklopediach i w aktualnych, corocznych informacjach prasowych, rzadko dowiedzieæ siê mo¿na. Informuje o tym najczê¶ciej zagraniczna prasa ¿ydowska i oczywi¶cie ¿ydowskie encyklopedie, najdok³adniej Encyclopaedia Judaica (Jerusalem-London, 1972 i pó¼niejszy Supplement), z której zreszt± czerpa³em informacje na ten temat do mojej ksi±¿ki Wielcy i s³awni - pochodzenia ¿ydowskiego (£ód¼ 1998).
