Previous News for January 2003 Next Nobel laureates oppose war against Iraq 29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Here are just a few of them: Donald Caspar Professor Donald L.D. Caspar is a pioneer in the field of structural biology, an offshoot of molecular biology that uses imaging techniques and molecular modeling to characterize the three-dimensional structures of viruses. A member of the National Academy of Science and a fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Caspar was one of the world's first scientists to recognize the beauty and symmetry of viral structure. Caspar has been peering inside molecular assemblies, postulating on their structure and function and enriching scientists' understanding of the basic chemical building blocks of life since the 1950s. At FSU, he leads a team in the Program of Structural Biology that focuses primarily on answering this key question: How do protein molecules move to build complex structures (such as viruses), transmit and receive signals, do mechanical work and myriad other functions? Professor Caspar's most lauded career discovery is a phenomenon known as icosahedral symmetry as applied to the physical, 3-D structure of viruses. In 1962 he and Nobel laureate Sir Aaron Klug came up with the landmark theory of molecular quasi-equivalence, which outlined the surprising symmetry inherent in many virus structures. The theory helped explain how these particles adapted their shapes and interactions in different parts of the structure to arrange themselves into an artfully symmetrical shell.

Robert Schrieffer The impact of electronic publishing on APS journals, science education reform, and improving communication between the physics community and the general public are issues of particular concern for the APS in the eyes of J. Robert Schrieffer, who begins his tenure as APS president this month. A professor of physics at the University of Florida, Schrieffer succeeds C. Kumar N. Patel of the University of California, Los Angeles. Schrieffer's interest in science developed early, with childhood interests in chemistry sets and ham radios. However, he didn't attend the standard physics class at his small high school in Illinois. The physics teacher there had minimal background in the subject, and, armed with a textbook used in MIT's introductory physics courses, he and Schrieffer pursued an independent course of study together. Ironically, Schrieffer initially intended to study electrical engineering in college, but switched his major to physics two years later. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois in 1957, specializing in the theory of superconductivity. After holding faculty appointments at the University of Illinois, University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania, he became Chancellor's Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also served as director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics. In 1992 he was appointed University Professor at Florida State University, where he is also chief scientist of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
