In 1944 Erwin Schroedinger , stimulated intellectually by , published a little book called What is Life? Max was awarded this Prize in 1969, and rejoicing in it, he also lamented that the work for which he was honored before all the peoples of the world was not something which he felt he could share with more than a handful. Samuel Beckett 's contributions in literature, being honored at the same time, seemed to Max somehow universally accessible to anyone. But not his. In his lecture here Max imagined his imprisonment in an ivory tower of science. "The books of the great scientists," he said, "are gathering dust on the shelves of learned libraries. And rightly so. The scientist addresses an infinitesimal audience of fellow composers. His message is not devoid of universality but it's universality is disembodied and anonymous. While the artist's communication is linked forever with it's original form, that of the scientist is modified, amplified, fused with the ideas and results of others, and melts into the stream of knowledge and ideas which forms our culture. The scientist has in common with the artist only this: that he can find no better retreat from the world than his work and also no stronger link with his world than his work."

Schrodinger invented wave mechanics as an alternative to Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, and was able to find the energy-levels of hydrogen, and also their multiplicity. This result had been achieved by Pauli a few months earlier, by using Heisenberg's formulation. It is often said that Schroedinger showed that his theory was equivalent to matrix mechanics; however, what he really showed was that is a separable Hilbert space, and that his theory is a special case of Heisenberg's. The full equivalence only follows from the Stone- von Neumann theorem, which says that the Heisenberg commutation relations, in the form posed by Weyl , has a unique irreducible representation. The physico-chemical basis of life In 1944, the physicist Erwin Schroedinger, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 (together with Paul Dirac) published a short volume called 'What is Life?' summarizing the emerging atomistic foundation of the biological sciences in the 1930s and '40s. Schroedinger proposed a correlation of the physical properties of DNA as an aperiodic 'crystal' with its function of storing the genetic information of every living organism. A few years later in 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson solved the high-resolution structure of DNA confirming Schroedinger's theoretical considerations, while themselves proposing a mechanism of DNA replication based on the structure of this molecule. A decade after Watson and Crick, the syntax of DNA, the genetic code, had been determined, and the biological, chemical, and physical pieces quickly fell into place establishing a picture of molecular biology which matured into a scientific fact establishing the foundation of the tremendously successful biotechnology.

Abstract
Erwin Schroedinger was an Austrian physist who became famous as the person who first studied wave mechanics. He produced equations about undulation that explained the behavior of electrons in atoms. These equations were the basis of wave mechanics, and they paved the way for the development of quantum mechanics. Advancements in these areas led Schroedinger to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933. His research covered fields from basic theoretical physics to theories about space. ERWIN SCHROEDINGER
Erwin Schroedinger What Is Life? , an attempt to show how quantum physics can be used to explain the stability of genetic structure. Although much of what Schroedinger had to say in this book has been modified and amplified by later developments in molecular biology, his book remains one of the most useful and profound introductions to the subject. In 1956 Schroedinger retired and returned to Vienna as professor emeritus at the university. Assessment of all of the physicists of his generation, Schroedinger stands out because of his extraordinary intellectual versatility. He was at home in the philosophy and literature of all of the Western languages, and his popular scientific writing in English, which he had learned as a child, is among the best of its kind. His study of ancient Greek science and philosophy, summarized in his Nature and the Greeks (1954), gave him both an admiration for the Greek invention of the scientific view of the world and a skepticism toward the relevance of science as a unique tool with which to unravel the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Schroedinger's own metaphysical outlook, as expressed in his last book, Meine Weltansicht (1961; My View of the World), closely paralleled the mysticism of the Vedanta. Because of his exceptional gifts, Schroedinger was able in the course of his life to make significant contributions to nearly all branches of science and philosophy, an almost unique accomplishment at a time when the trend was toward increasing technical specialization in these disciplines.
