Glenn Seaborg: A Towering Figure In Chemistry
Editors Note: Glenn T. Seaborg is a legendary name in chemistry today-so well-known and well-beloved, in fact, that C&EN readers gave him the third-highest number of votes in the balloting process that nominated "C&EN's Top 75 Distinguished Contributors to the Chemical Enterprise." Only Linus Pauling and Robert B. Woodward received more votes. William Schulz

here is a welcoming sort of clutter in the office of Glenn T. Seaborg- organized piles of books and papers, hundreds of photographs, a stepladder, various desk lamps, and, not surprisingly, several different displays of the periodic table of the elements. He is a busy man still engaged with a career in chemistry and physics that-so far- spans an incredible six decades. One of his displays of the periodic table-etched onto a glass plate-is an award that highlights in gold leaf the symbol for seaborgium, element 106. It is a potent reminder of Seaborg's legacy in the chemical sciences. In addition to being the discoverer of plutonium, he is the only chemist to hold patents on chemical elements (americium, curium). His revision of the periodic table-the actinide concept-still stands as the most significant since Mendeleyev's 19th-century design. Today, his research associates at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., are engaged in the search for new isotopes and new elements at the upper end of the periodic table, including the so-called superheavy elements.

Herman Theodore Seaborg, the son of Swedish immigrants, worked as a mechanic in Ishpeming, Michigan. He married Selma Erickson , who had been born in Grangesburg, in the Dalarna region of Sweden.
In 1912 their son, Glenn Seaborg was born. He worked his way through college as a stevedore, fruit-packer and laboratory assistant. Seaborg became professor at the University of California in 1945 and six years later was awarded the Nobel prize for his discovery of plutonium and his research into transuranic elements.

Nobel, nobelium, No , pierwiastek chemiczny o  liczbie atomowej 102, otrzymany sztucznie w 1965 (pierwotne doniesienia o odkryciu nobla ju¿ w 1957 okaza³y siê fa³szywe - postanowiono jednak zachowaæ nadan± ju¿ wtedy przez pozornych odkrywców pierwotn± nazwê nobla, mimo zg³aszanych nowych propozycji, np. joliotum). Nobel nale¿y do grupy III B ( skandowce , do szeregu aktynowców ) w  uk³adzie okresowym pierwiastków . Dotychczas otrzymano 10 izotopów nobla, wszystkie s± silnie promieniotwórcze i na tyle nietrwa³e, ¿e nie mo¿na otrzymaæ odwa¿alnych ilo¶ci nobla. Najtrwalszy izotop o masie atomowej 259,1 wykazuje czas po³owicznego zaniku 58 min. ³±cznie wytworzono dot±d ok. 1 mln atomów nobla (czyli 4 g) i zbadano niektóre ich w³asno¶ci chemiczne: nobel ma charakter typowo metaliczny, zbli¿ony do wapnia , a jego zwi±zki s± podobne do zwi±zków wapnia i, w mniejszym stopniu, iterbu . Nobel Prize Centennial 1901-2001 University of Chicago News: Resources
University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences. Six Laureates are currently members of the faculty: James Heckman (Economic Sciences, 2000), Robert Lucas (Economic Sciences, 1995), Robert Fogel (Economic Sciences, 1993), Gary Becker (Economic Sciences, 1992), Ronald Coase (Economic Sciences, 1991) and James Cronin (Physics, 1980). James Heckman , a Professor in Economics and Public Policy, studies methodologies used to measure the impact of social programs, such as minimum-wage legislation and anti-discrimination law. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on analyzing selective samples. Robert Lucas Robert Fogel , a Professor in the Graduate School of Business, shared the award for applying economics and statistics to the study of history. In his work on slavery in the United States, Fogel has argued that the market would not have ended slavery, as it remained a profitable and efficient system for slave owners.
