Poet Jaroslav Seifert is the only Czech in history to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, receiving the award in 1984. But there were no celebrations in Czechoslovakia when he received the award: Jaroslav Seifert had fallen from grace with the Communist authorities due to his outspoken criticism of the regime. Alena Skodova has more. On September 23rd, Jaroslav Seifert would have been 100 years old. He was born in Zizkov, now in the Prague 3 district, and on Sunday there was a small celebration outside the house where he was born. A bronze plaque of Seifert was unveiled in the presence of local mayor Milan Cesky, whose district contributed to the plaque with a substantial gift.

Another book, An Umbrella from Piccadilly DeÅ¡tnk z Piccadilly ), also translated by Osers, was published in 1983 (also in a small edition). Both of these books disappeared at the time without generating any particular interest. There was, however, a brief flicker of interest in Seifert after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1984. With people evidently demanding to know who this Seifert was and why had he been awarded the Nobel Prize, Osers went into overdrive and in 1986, the first edition of this extensive collection of Seifert’s poetry (including the two earlier books as well as a selection of poems from Seifert’s older work and ten short extracts from Seifert’s memoirs translated by George Gibian) was published. However, it too met with little success. Evidently the gap between the awarding of the prize and the publication of a sizeable paperback edition of Seifert’s poetry was long enough for the poetry reading public to forget completely who he was and why they ought to read him. This book too rapidly disappeared from view. Catbird Press have now decided to reissue the whole collection, suitably revised, expanded and updated, and this is very welcome. Such an extensive collection (92 poems) means that with the exception of Miroslav Holub, Seifert is the best served of all Czech poets as far as translations into English are concerned. Whether this book will have any more success than its predecessors remains to be seen, but there is little cause for optimism. This new edition differs from the 1986 edition in that eight additional poems from

is one of greatest Czech poets of 20th century. In 1984 he won the Nobel prize for literature "for his poetry which endowed with freshness, sensuality and rich investiveness provides a liberating image of the indomitable spirit and versatility of man." Preliminary part of Seifert´s poetry is written by means of melodic poetics in regular rhythm and with unexchangeable soft and easy rhyme. However, later the poet left his favourite form and replaced it by prosaic free verse. Basic topics, all the time recurring in Jaroslav Seifert works, include love, deep feeling for his mother, relation to woman as a symbol of human happiness and harmony. We can find here poems connected with national traditions and the Czech landscape. And last but not least, there is also many times celebrated name of the city which the poet loved more than "all attractions of the world". The city called Prague.

    Jaroslav Seifert

Jaroslav Seifert, the first and to date the only Czech winner of the Nobel prize for literature, was primarily a poet but he was also a journalist, translator and prose writer. His influence on Czech literature has been felt throughout the twentieth century. Seifert was the leading representative of avant-garde art. He was a member of the group Devìtsil. First, he wrote proletarian poetry. Later, Seifert and Vítìzslav Nezval were the chief exponents of poetism. During the Second World War Seifert became a fearless defender of Czech national culture. In his declining years, he was an outstanding representative of the democratic trend in Czech arts. As early as the mid 1950s, Seifert took a courageous stance within the writers' opposition challenging the communist totalitarian regime. In course of time he edited a number of periodicals (for instance Nová scéna, [The New Scene], 1930, Pestré kvìty [The Bright Flowers], 1930-1932, Panorama, 1940-1941, Kytice [The Garland],1945-1948, Práce [Labour], 1945-1949. In the publishing house Práce he was responsible for editing Klín (Wedge), a series of books of poetry between 1945 and 1948. He also prepared a selection from the works of Jaroslav Vrchlický and Stanislav Kostka Neumann. In 1966 he was named national artist and in 1984 his life's work brought him the Nobel prize for literature.
