Seifert, Jaroslav
Jaroslav Seifert was born on 23 September 1901 into a working-class family living in Zizkov, a suburb of Prague. He attended secondary school and soon began devoting himself to writing poetry and to journalism. He made his debut in 1918; he published his first collection of poems in 1921. He belonged to the extreme left wing of the Social Democratic Party, which, in 1921, was to form the core of the Communist Party in newly formed Czechoslovakia. He became an editor of communist newspapers and magazines (Rovnost, Srsatec, Reflektor) while, at the same time, working at the communist publishing house and bookstore. In the 1920s he was a leading representative of the Czechoslovakian artistic avant-garde; he served on the editorial staffs of several of its publications. He translated from the French (Apollinaire, Verlaine, and others).
In March 1929, together with six other important communist writers, he signed a manifesto protesting against Bolshevik tendencies in the new leadership of Czechoslovakia's Communist Party, and together with his fellow signers, he was expelled from the party. From 1930, he served in various editorial posts within the social democratic press (Pestré kvety, Ranní noviny). During the German occupation, he was editor of the daily Národní práce and after 1945, of the trade-union daily Práce.

Huruvida det var tur eller skicklighet, som gjorde att undertecknad som förste journalist i världen fick intervjua den tjeckiske nobelpristagaren i litteratur - Jaroslav Seifert - i Prag i början av november 1984 överlåter jag åt andra att bedöma. Min egen åsikt är att det var en kombination av båda egenskaperna plus en stor portion självförtroende, initiativrikedom, monumental fräckhet samt förmågan att i vissa situa- tioner tänja på begreppet sanning för att uppnå sitt mål.

Translating Seifert by Tim Rogers Jaroslav Seifert was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1984. Two years later, he died, his work virtually unknown in English. As if to prove that it’s never too late to correct the misadventures of the publishing world, two new volumes of Seifert’s poems have recently been published in English: The Early Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert and The Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert . Both are handsome editions and well worth their somewhat costly cover prices. The Early Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert , published by Northwestern University Press, attempts to answer a problem often cited by both translators and admirers of his work in the original: that his early poems are composed with such a richness of sound and aural texture that they are very difficult to recreate in another language. Dana Loewy attempts to resolve this difficulty with a studious effort at translating, in their entirety, Seifert’s first four books, which were published between 1921 and 1926. While he succeeds on some counts, his work is often marred by an overly academic approach. In his introduction, Loewy argues that some previous translations have served Seifert’s work poorly. Unfortunately, his own renderings tend to overly poeticise, wrenching the diction away from natural fluidity. He translates the title of Seifert’s second book, Sama laska , as ‘Sheer Love’, while Ewald Osers, the translator of The Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert , opts for the more colloquial (and clearer) ‘Nothing But Love’.
