George Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw was a writer of great élan and perception who brought much colour and vivacity to contemporary life of the period. His writings were diverse and covered the fields of politics, religion, and literature. He was noted for his satire and verbal artistry, the controversy around him, his politics, and the persona of 'GBS'. He was an early and devoted member of the Fabian Society, joining it in September 1884, and he contributed to and edited the definitive Fabian Essays in Socialism (1889). He adopted a pragmatic and welfare-oriented approach to politics in which the concepts of right and faith were central to a progressive socialist realism seeking equality. He was a local government councillor in St.Pancras from 1897-1903.
He and the Webbs were to disagree over the School's purpose and its political neutrality. For Shaw the School should be explicitly collectivist in outlook and  teaching; for the Webbs, the School had one purpose: unbiased and objective study to discover the truth of the matter. The Webb perspective was to guide the School, and Shaw's political energies were absorbed elsewhere.
Shaw first made his name as a music critic (1888-94) and by his dramatic criticism (1895-98). Post 1898, his reputation stems from his qualities as a playwright and the 'Shavian' style and themes he developed in his work throughout  his career. He is best remembered for his drama, plays like

In keepsake, broadways lights were shut off for a couple of minutes to remember this genius. 2. „Pygmalion“ a) The storyline In general the play is about the transformation of the poor uneducated flower-girl Eliza Doolittle into a duchess-like lady. The phonetic expert Henry Higgins bets with his friend Colonel Pickering that he could turn anybody, no matter what dialect of lower class they speak, into a well-mannered person that speaks proper English. So they pick up the innocent cockney speaking Eliza of the street to start the experiment which will not work out as they expect it to... . b) Historical background Shaw got the inspiration for the name of his play from Ovids „Metamorphoses“. It is about the women-detesting man Pygmalion who creates out of hatred a perfect woman out of stone. But then, of a sudden, he fell in love with her and asked Aphrodite, the goddess of love, to make her come alive. After she did so, Pygmalion called her Galatea and they married and were happy ever after. c) Performances
The success of the play was for sure since the first performance in Vienna. Shortly after it was already translated into four languages. In the following years it didn’t lose its attractivity. Already in 1935 the first movie was filmed and since 1956 it is world famous as the musical „My Fair Lady“ by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. But before it’s premiere this success was never thought of. Not just the problems of casting a fifty year old for the 18 year-old character Eliza, but differences between Shaw‘s and the director‘s methods of putting a play on stage. Beerbohm, the director, also wanted to change the end of the play to a happy ending other than Shaws authentic version. This happy ending is, by the way, one of the major differences between „Pygmalion“ and the musical „My Fair Lady“.

July 26 ~  Creating Yourself Shaw's Plays Life isn't about f i n d i n g yourself. L i f e is a b o u t creating yourself." ~ George Bernard Shaw Irish playwright and novelist George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was born on this day in Dublin and known for his barbed wit. "I often quote myself," he said. "It adds spice to my conversation." Self-taught because he disliked formal training, G.B.S. (he disliked his name "George," too) began as a London theatre critic, then wrote his first novel to further criticize the English stage. He explained his reason for action : "You don't learn to hold your own in the world by standing on guard, but by attacking and getting well-hammered yourself." His over over 52 plays and pamphlets among them, Candida Pygmalion (1912), and Saint Joan (1923)showcase memorable characters and brilliant insights: "If you are going to tell people the truth , you'd better make them laugh . Otherwise they'll kill you." Famous for mixing philosophy and humor, G.B.S. wrote most of his own work in shorthand. "A drama critic is a man who leaves no turn unstoned," he said. In 1925, Shaw won the

    Author Info: George Bernard Shaw
The greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished.
-George Bernard Shaw Though almost universally interpreted as a critical statement on the artificiality of class and social status, Pygmalion is really just an update of Paradise Lost and the Genesis story of the Fall of Man. This is most obvious from the way that Shaw changes the ending of the classic myth from which he borrows the plot and title and by his referring several times to Henry Higgins as Miltonic. The original Pygmalion was a character in Ovid's Metamorphoses , a woman-hating sculptor who chiseled a perfect female out of stone. He became so enamored with his creation that he asked the gods to grant her life. Venus answered his prayers, turning the statue into a living woman, Galatea, whom Pygmalion then married. In his version of the Pygmalion tale, Shaw eschews this happy ending and, whether wittingly or no, turns the story into a Biblical allegory. Henry Higgins takes the role of God : You see this creature with her kerbstone English: the English that will keep her in the gutter to the
end of her days. Well, sir, in three months I could pass that girl off as a duchess at an ambassador's

About the Playwright: George Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw is perhaps one of the most prolific writers of the modern era. Though he is best known as a playwright, Shaw was also a respected critic, journalist, novelist, and essayist. A noted social reformer, Shaw wrote plays which dramatized social commentaries, and in 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his achievements. Today, his works are studied in literature classes worldwide and are considered classics of modern drama. Born July 26, 1856, in Dublin, Ireland, Shaw was given a Protestant upbringing by his father, a civil servant, and his mother, a music teacher and a vocalist. Through his mother, Shaw gained an appreciation for classical music that he later credited as the base interest which led to his eventual successes. The young Shaw disliked organized education; at age fourteen, he decided the whole schooling system was valueless and promptly dropped out. But he had a passion for learning, so Shaw gave himself an informal education. He read voraciously, and he frequented the National Gallery of Dublin, where he studied art and history. At age twenty, Shaw made the trip to London to begin a literary career. He made a name for himself as a music critic, and soon he was writing criticisms of art, literature, and drama. By 1890, Shaw had been published in nearly every major London publication, including The Pall Mall Gazette and Saturday Review. During this time, he also wrote five novels, published mainly in socialist papers, which were never as successful as his plays and essays.

was born into an impoverished branch of the Irish landed gentry. In 1876 he came to London to work as a journalist and arts critic, struggled for some years, but eventually embarked on a literary career. His first novels written in the 1880's, were all failures, but he gained fame in other areas: as a socialist pamphleteer, a critic, an orator, and a campaigning vegetarian. In the 1890's, inspired by Ibsen, he began to write modern comic drama, which was hugely successful. Over the following years, his playsincluding Arms and the Man Candida (1897), and John Bull's Other Island (1904)became internationally admired. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925 following the publication of his most acclaimed play, St. Joan , in 1924. Shaw was 94 when he died, attributing longevity to his vegetarian lifestyle. Ellen Terry
was the most celebrated actress of her generation. After several false starts and two broken marriages, she began, in 1878 a 24 year partnership with the actor Sir Henry Irving, as his leading lady. The couple became famous internationally for their Shakespearean productions, but their partnership on stage was never formalized in marriage. When Irving's affection for her began to fade, Ellen began the famous "paper courtship" with Shaw. After the correspondence petered out she married in 1907 for the third and last time. Her new husband American actor James Carew; he was some 30 years younger than Ellen and the marriage soon broke up. She continued her career on the stage, in films, and as a Shakespearean lecturer, and was made a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in the year Shaw became a Nobel Laureate.

A dramatist who laughs at time, George Bernard Shaw has had three plays in production on Broadway this past season. Mr. Shaw was born in Dublin in July, 1856, and these are the dates which stand out in his record: 1876, when he captured London for life; 1884, when he became the leading spirit of the Fabian Society; 1898, when he was married; and 1925, when he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
    by George Bernard Shaw

C APITAL Punishment is a term which indicates muddled thinking. The dilemma of kill or be killed, which confronts civilized society daily and inexorably, is bedeviled by the jumble of panic, superstition, and angry resentment we call punishment, expiation, propitiatory blood sacrifice, justice, and many other imposing names. The dilemma is a hard fact which must be faced and organized. The jumble should be unraveled and its superstitions utterly discarded.
Let me illustrate. Dogs are friends of Man; but an exceptional dog sometimes goes mad and runs amok through the streets, biting and infecting everybody it comes across. Fond as we may be of dogs we must kill it on the spot, by gun or bludgeon.
Cobras and adders, perfectly sane and normal, may get loose in a school playground or domestic garden. We break their necks without trial by jury.
