"Great Britain and the United States are two nations separated by a common language." - George Bernard Shaw "The ordinary man is an anarchist. He wants to do as he likes. He may want his neighbour to be governed, but he himself doesn't want to be governed. He is mortally afraid of government officials and policemen." - George Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw was a writer, literary critic, and a leading figure in the 20th Century Theater. He was also well known as a freethinker: he supported Socialism, women's rights, changes in the voting system, and campaigned for the simplification of spelling and the reform of the English alphabet. Bernard, as he preferred to be called, had a profound affect on society during his lifetime, which was evidenced by his winning the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 26, 1856. He was the son of George Carr Shaw a wholesaler of grain, and Lucinda Elisabeth (Gurly) Shaw. His father was a drunkard, and the family lived in a poor section of the town. Bernard attended several schools in his youth, but came away with a limited education as he had a dislike for organized training. He attended the Wesleyan Connexional School, a private school near Dalkey, and Dublin Central Middle School before ending his formal education at Dublin English Scientific and Commercial Day School. His family never had the money for University training, so his education stopped at the age of fifteen, when he went to work as a clerk in an estate agent's office.

George Bernard Shaw
Playwright, essayist, and pamphleteer, born in Dublin, Ireland. In 1876 he left office-work in Ireland and moved to London, England. In 1882 he found socialism, joined the committee of the Fabian Society, and became known as a journalist, writing music and drama criticism, and publishing critical essays. He began writing plays in 1885, and among his early successes were Arms and the Man (1894), Candida (1897), and The Devil's Disciple (1897). There followed Man and Superman (1905), Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor's Dilemma (1906), and several others, displaying an increasing range of subject matter. Later plays include the "religious pantomime' Androcles and the Lion (1912), and the "anti-romantic' comedy Pygmalion (1913), adapted as the musical play My Fair Lady, in 1956 (filmed, 1964). After World War 1 followed Heartbreak House (1919), Back to Methuselah (1921), and Saint Joan (1923).

Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.
George Bernard Shaw
The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity. George Bernard Shaw The fickleness of the women I love is only equaled by the infernal constancy of the women who love me. Playwright, born in Dublin into a loveless and genteely poor household overshadowed by his father's tippling, but filled with music and musicians by his mother. Shaw was educated both at Wesley Connexional School, in the National Gallery of Ireland, and by his own wide reading. In 1876 he joined his mother who had moved to London as a music teacher. From 1878 to 1883 Shaw wrote but failed to publish five novels, but in subsequent years made remarkable intellectual progress, acheived conquest over his shyness, and made many important friendships. In 1884 Shaw joined the Fabian Society, and over the next decade wrote as a book reviewer for the Pall Mall Gazette, an art critic for the World, a music critic for the Star under the pseudonym Corno di Bassetto, and dramatic critic for the Saturday Review. By 1925, Shaw's work earned him the Nobel Prize. He established the Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation and left residue of an estate to institute a British alphabet of at least forty letters Tall 8vo, 5 3/4 x 9, pale green cloth with design and lettering in darker green by Walter Crane on upper side and by May Morris on spine, both incorporating the date 1889, all edges uncut, dark green toned end-papers. Crane's design is also reproduced as the frontispiece.

"Just as the historian can teach no real history until he has cured his readers of the romantic delusion that the greatness of a queen consists in her being a pretty woman and having her head cut off, so the playwright of the first order can do nothing with his audience until he has cured them of looking at the stage through the keyhole, and sniffing round the theatre as prurient people sniff round the divorce court." George Bernard Shaw Plays Opinions A brief biography Survey 1856–1950, Irish playwright and critic. Shaw was the son of an unsuccessful merchant; his mother was a singer who left her husband to teach singing in London. He left school at 14 to work in an estate agent’s office. In 1876 he went to London and was largely supported by his parents for nine years. Shaw was himself an ardent socialist, a member of the Fabian Society , and a popular public speaker on behalf of socialism. He revolutionized the Victorian stage, then dominated artificial melodramas by presenting vigorous dramas of ideas. The lengthy prefaces to Shaw’s plays reveal his mastery of English prose. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Bernard Shaw, born in Dublin in 1856, was essentially shy, yet created the persona of George Bernard Shaw, the showman, controversialist, satirist, critic, pundit, wit, intellectual buffoon and dramatist. Commentators brought a new adjective into the English language: Shavian, a term used to embody all his brilliant qualities. After his arrival in London in 1876 he became an active Socialist and a brilliant platform speaker. He wrote on many social aspects of the day:
