George Bernard Shaw
Biography
George Bernard Shaw (b. July 26, 1856, Dublin, d. Nov. 2, 1950, Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, England), Irish comic dramatist, literary critic, and Socialist propagandist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925.
Early life and career.
George Bernard Shaw was the third and youngest child (and only son) of George Carr Shaw and Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly Shaw. Technically, he belonged to the Protestant "ascendancy" the landed Irish gentry but his impractical father was first a sinecured civil servant and then an unsuccessful grain merchant, and George Bernard grew up in an atmosphere of genteel poverty, which to him was more humiliating than being merely poor. At first tutored by a clerical uncle, Shaw basically rejected the schools he then attended, and by age 16 he was working in a land agent's office.
Shaw developed a wide knowledge of music, art, and literature as a result of his mother's influence and his visits to the National Gallery of Ireland. In 1872 his mother left her husband and took her two daughters to London, following her music teacher, George John Vandeleur Lee, who from 1866 had shared households in Dublin with the Shaws. In 1876 Shaw resolved to become a writer, and he joined his mother and elder sister (the younger one having died) in London. Shaw in his 20s suffered continuous frustration and poverty. He depended upon his mother's pound a week from her husband and her earnings as a music teacher. He spent his afternoons in the British Museum reading room, writing novels and reading what he had missed at school, and his evenings in search of additional self-education in the lectures and debates that characterized contemporary middle-class London intellectual activities.

George Bernard Shaw
Irish playwright and critic
His dramas of ideas revolutionized the Victorian stage, and his criticism is considered superb. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. A Fabian socialist, Shaw was a popular speaker and wrote five novels before becoming a music critic for London newspapers in 1888. After 1895, as drama critic for the Saturday Review, he won readers to IBSEN. His early plays were collected in Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant (1898). Among the "unpleasant" plays was Mrs. Warren's Profession (1893), a jibe at Victorian attitudes on prostitution. The "pleasant" plays included Arms and the Man (1894), satirizing romantic attitudes toward love and war, and Candida (1893). In 1897 The Devil's Disciple, on the American Revolution, was a success in New York City. It was published along with Caesar and Cleopatra (1899) and Captain Brassbound's Conversion (1900). Shaw's major plays came in the next 15 years: Man and Superman (1905), on men, women, and marriage; Major Barbara (1905), arguing poverty as the root of all evil; and Androcles and the Lion (1912), satirizing Christianity. Pygmalion (1913) has been his most successful play. A satire on English class attitudes, it was the basis for the 1956 musical My Fair Lady. Of Shaw's later plays, Saint Joan (1923), a dramatic consideration of JOAN OF ARC, is best known. His most notable nonfiction work is probably The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism (1928). Concise Columbia Encyclopedia

EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS Interviews with maverick directors ALISTAIR COOKE Listen to the veteran America expert George Bernard Shaw 1856 - 1950 Back to audio clips Born in Dublin of middle-class but impoverished stock, Shaw was forced to leave school at 15 to take a job as a clerk. His father became an alcoholic and in 1872 his mother left home, going to London with her 2 daughters. Shaw followed them there in 1876. In London, Shaw regularly went to the British Museum in order to educate himself, a fact which may partly account for the originality and independence of his thinking. In the mid-1880s, he began to be active in the Socialist movement, becoming a noted orator and an influential member of the recently-founded Fabian Society, an influential group of middle-class socialists who sought to transform society by non-revolutionary means. In 1889, he edited and contributed to Fabian Essays in Socialism. He also became famous for his music, drama and art criticism. Shaw was quick to see the importance of Henrik Ibsen, the pioneering Norwegian dramatist who used the theatre to expose social isues. Ibsen's influence is apparent in Shaw's first play, Widowers' Houses (1892), which attacked slum landlordism in London. His second, Mrs Warren's Profession (1894), tackled organised prostitution and was banned as obscene. Other plays followed, all of which displayed the characteristic 'Shavian' mix of witty irony and moral seriousness.

    G. Bernard Shaw (he hated the "George" and never used it, either personally or professionally) was born in 1856 in Dublin, in a lower-middle class family of Scottish-Protestant ancestry. His father was a failed corn-merchant, with a drinking problem and a squint (which Oscar Wilde's father, a leading Dublin surgeon, tried unsuccessfully to correct); his mother was a professional singer, the sole disciple of Vandeleur Lee, a voice teacher claiming to have a unique and original approach to singing. When Shaw was just short of his sixteenth birthday, his mother left her husband and son and moved with Vandeleur Lee to London, where the two set up a household, along with Shaw's older sister Lucy (who later became a successful music hall singer). Shaw remained in Dublin with his father, completing his schooling (which he hated passionately), and working as a clerk for an estate office (which he hated just as much as school). It may not be a accidental, then, that Shaw's plays, including

George Bernard Shaw
Irish comic dramatist and literary critic. 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature,1856-1950
Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it He who has never hoped can never despair Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not. Nothing is worth doing unless the consequences may be serious. This is the true joy in life being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one... The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it. Silence is the most perfect expression of scorn. Life is not meant to be easy, my child; but take courage it can be delightful. It is dangerous to be sincere unless you are also stupid. Few people think more than two or three times a year. I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week. Homepage Advertising Contact Us FAQ/ Help George Bernard Shaw quotes Want to receive a daily FREE!!

Shaw was born in Dublin and although he lived almost the whole of his life in England he still insisted on retaining his Irish nationality. He was a keen, if very selective, supporter of Irish causes. His family was Protestant and, after not very happy schooldays, he reluctantly began work in a land agent's office. Eventually however he emigrated to London with his mother and sister, who both hoped to develop their musical careers while he himself began to write. Shaw's early years in England were marked by poverty and between 1879 and 1883 he wrote five novels, all of them scorned by major publishers although at least two, 'Love Among The Artists' and 'Cashel Byron's Profession', have since been taken more seriously as casting light on his later work.
Shaw's first public impact as a writer came with his work as music critic on the Star newspaper (1888-90) using the pseudonym Corno di Bassetto. He did much to encourage public interest in opera, in particular the works of
