Siegbahn, Karl Manne Georg Physicien suédois. Né à Orebro (Suède), Siegbahn fait ses études à l'université de Lund, où il devient assistant en 1911. De 1922 à 1937, il est professeur de physique à l'université d'Uppsala et, de 1937 à 1964, à l'Académie royale des sciences de Suède. Il a été le premier directeur de l'Institut Nobel de physique expérimentale. En 1914, Siegbahn oriente ses travaux vers la spectroscopie par rayons X, méthode basée sur le fait que chaque élément, lorsqu'il est bombardé par des électrons rapides, émet des rayons X dont la longueur d'onde et la fréquence sont caractéristiques de cet élément. Il améliore le spectromètre à rayons X, ce qui lui permet de découvrir des familles de rayons X inconnues jusqu'alors. Les travaux de Siegbahn ont apporté une meilleure compréhension de la structure de l'atome et une confirmation du modèle en couches pour les électrons autour du noyau. Ses recherches ont porté sur presque tous les éléments, du sodium à l'uranium. Son ouvrage paru en 1923, Spectroscopy of X Rays, fait encore référence et ses recherches ont permis d'appliquer la spectroscopie X à des domaines aussi divers que la physique nucléaire, la chimie, l'astrophysique et la médecine. En 1924, il reçoit le prix Nobel de physique.
