Praca nasza wymaga³a ogromnego nak³adu czasu. Wiele godzin spêdzi³yœmy w bibliotekach, czytelniach, poszukuj¹c tekstów, szperaj¹c, analizuj¹c. Odrêbnym etapem naszej pracy by³o przygotowanie zebranych materia³ów, segregowanie, eliminowanie i uzupe³nianie. Kolejnym naszym problemem by³o zaprojektowanie ksi¹¿ki od strony graficznej. Zale¿a³o nam, aby ca³oœæ by³a atrakcyjna, a zarazem czytelna. Dla uzyskania estetycznego wygl¹du zachowa³yœmy niewielkie marginesy, oraz wyró¿ni³yœmy tytu³y dzie³. Quo Vadis - Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel is now a major Polish film
At work on Quo Vadis When Director of Photography Andrzej Jaroszewicz was a student in 1959, he managed to get onto the set of Night Train just to watch Director Jerzy Kawalerowicz in action. In 1965 he acquired a walk-on part in Faraon , but admits he didn't pay much attention to the role; he was far more interested in observing how Kawalerowicz worked. Now, thirty-six years later, and with more than twenty feature films to his credit, Jaroszewicz is working alongside the master he has long admired on Quo Vadis , Poland's biggest ever film production. "I showed Kawalerowicz part of my earlier film, Silver Globe , where the camera becomes the eye of a wise spectator who knows exactly what to watch. I proposed to use the camera in a similar way on Quo Vadis . Fortunately after lots of discussions, our cameras and our minds met." Christians about to be fed to the lions. Kawalerowicz visualised a very expressive human drama of the people of Ancient Rome who loved, hated, fought and began to believe in Christianity through their contact with the first Christians. He never intended that the shots of Rome in the new Polish Quo Vadis would be in the Hollywood style or on the Hollywood scale. The computer-generated images of Ancient Rome, while stunningly realistic and impressive, were to be an added attraction; this was first and foremost a story of real human beings to whom the audience could relate. "We didn't want to introduce any special lights or tricks which change with the level of drama; we didn't want cold light in dramatic scenes; it's an overused trick. The Roman world we wanted to present would be saturated with light, bright, clear, colourful and warm, but at the same time we wanted to make this film different," says Jaroszewicz.

Fire in the Steppe
Winner of a Nobel Prize in his day, Henryk Sienkiewicz specialized in big, action-packed historical novels of Poland and this was one of his best. Set in 1668-1672, during the Turkish invasion of Poland, Fire in the Steppe features a pantheon of memorable heroic characters, much nationalist sentiment and some truly raging battle scenes. The heroine, Basia, is a Polish icon. Twentieth-century writers have sometimes pillioned Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) for his stories' lack of philosophical depth, but no one quarrels with his ability to tell a rip-roaring yarn. View Book Bag

Henryk Sienkiewicz
In 1905, four years after the first Nobel Prize, he was the first Polish author to receive the award for literature. He wrote about the most heroic and tragic episodes of Polish history. His best known work is Quo Vadis? (1896), an analogy of his compatriots and Russia to the early Christians and Imperial Rome but his greatest work is the trilogy With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Pan Wolodyjowski (1883-1888). In his day, his country had ceased to exist politically. Through his historical writings he was, as he said, the Ambassador of Poland to the world at large.
