Han var ansat på Hjørring sygehus 1944-46, men fik i 1947 en stilling som amanuensis på Fysiologisk Institut ved Aarhus Universitet hvor han begyndte at arbejde med en problemstilling han havde medbragt fra kirurgisk afdeling, mekanismen bag virkningen af lokalanæstetika.
