Figur 1. The discovery could lead to more accurate atomic clocks for use in space navigation. Chemistry: Paul D. Boyer (U.S.), Jens C. Skou (Denmark), and John E. Walker (U.K.) for their discoveries about a molecule that allows the human body to store and transfer energy between cells. Skou received half the prize money for his discovery of an enzyme that works with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to regulate levels of potassium and sodium in cells. Boyer and Walker shared the other half for their discovery of the process that creates ATP. Medicine: Economics: Robert C. Merton and Myron S. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to
Professor Paul D. Boyer , University of California, Los Angeles, USA, and
Dr. John E. Walker , Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, United Kingdom
for their elucidation of the enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
and with one half to Professor Jens C. Skou , Aarhus University, Denmark for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na , K -ATPase. The three laureates have performed pioneering work on enzymes that participate in the conversion of the "high-energy" compound adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Paul D. Boyer and John E. Walker receive half the prize for their work on how the enzyme ATP synthase catalyses the formation of ATP. Boyer and his co-workers have proposed, on the basis of biochemical data, a mechanism for how ATP is formed from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate. Walker and his co-workers have established the structure of the enzyme and verified the mechanism proposed by Boyer. Jens C. Skou

    The Chemistry Nobel Prize
The Nobel prize in chemistry is the greatest acknowledgment that can be given to chemists for their research. This page has a link to a list of all the people that have received the Nobel chemistry prize, and links to web sites about Nobel prize winners who have done research that I personally have found interesting.
The 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Professor Paul D. Boyer, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, and Dr. John E. The 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Robert Curl Harold Kroto , and Richard Smalley for their work in fullerenes, carbon atoms bound together in soccer ball like configurations. This discovery of a new allotrope of carbon, other than the well known graphite and diamond forms, came as a shock to most physicists and chemists. The research and the reasons for awarding the prize to Professors Curl, Kroto and Smalley are best described by the
