Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Frederick Soddy The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1921 Frederick Soddy, the son of Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant, was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. In 1895 he obtained a scholarship at Merton College, Oxford, from which University he graduated in 1898 with first class honors in chemistry. After two years of research at Oxford he went to Canada and from 1900 to 1902 was Demonstrator in the Chemistry Department of McGill University, Montreal. Here he worked with Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford on problems of radioactivity. They also investigated the gaseous emanation of radium. Leaving Canada, Soddy then worked with Sir William Ramsay at University College, London where he continued the study of radium emanation. Here, Soddy and Ramsay were able to demonstrate, by spectroscopic means, that the elements helium was produced in the radioactive decay of a sample of radium bromide and that helium was evolved in the decay of emanation. He was awarded the Albert Medal in 1951. He was recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1921 "for his contributions to our knowledge of the chemistry of radioactive substances, and his investigations into the origin and nature of isotopes".

    Isotopes: Soddy
    Frederick Soddy (1877-1956; see photo at Edgar Fahs Smith collection, University of Pennsylvania) is best known for three major contributions toward the understanding of radioactivity and associated phenomena. With Ernest Rutherford, he saw that radioactive substances were transformed from one element to another [ ]. About 10 years later, he unravelled the rules for the elemental transformations which accompanied radioactive decay, first for a decay and later for b decay. Emission of an a particle changes the emitting atom to an atom of the element two places to the left in the periodic table; emission of a b particle changes the emitting atom to an atom of the element one place to the right. These rules taken together are known as the Displacement Law; Kasimir Fajans published it slightly earlier than did Soddy [Fajans 1913, Soddy 1913a ]. At about the same time, Soddy came to the conclusion that several substances with different radioactive properties and different atomic weights were chemically the same element. He named such substances isotopes Soddy received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1921 for his work on isotopes. In his lecture at the award ceremony, he said of isotopes, "Put colloquially, their atoms have identical outsides but different insides."     INTRODUCTION
    The study of Economics has never lacked its `heretics' - those who, from outside the academic specialty, have often enough brought to the subject a fresh viewpoint, inspired not so much by theory as by a practical observation of the realities of trade and commerce, and a keen sense of the human element in what is otherwise a rather abstract discipline. Among these pioneers, few have been so distinguished, from the point of view of academic credentials in other fields, as Frederick Soddy. Soddy was a world renowned researcher in the study of the chemistry of radioactive materials. His studies with Ruther ford at McGill University between 1902 and 1904 had added the word `isotope' to the vocabulary of chemistry, had disclosed the immense stores of energy contained within every atom, and had ultimately earned him a Professorship of Chemistry at Oxford Unive rsity, and the 1921 Nobel Prize in chemistry, awarded him in 1922. Soddy himself was inspired by his experiences of the first World War to develop great concern on a subject that concerns scientists perhaps more today than it did at that time - the possibility that his invention could be used for destruction. He trod new ground when he began to apply his scientific mind and method to the investigation of the economic forces that could cause this to be so. (1)

    Frederick Soddy (1897-1956) English scientist born in Sussex in 1897 and died in Brighton in 1956. Studied in the University of Oxford. From 1900 to 1902 it was Chemistry assistant in the University of McGill, Montreal, where he co-worked with Rutherford . Was professor in the Universities of Glasgow and Aberdeen, and, from 1916 to 1936, was responsible for the teaching of inorganic Chemistry and Chemical-Physics in the University of Oxford. Accomplished innumerous experimental research works, being one of the first to study radioactivity; in collaboration with Rutherford , developed the theory of radioelement disintegration. In 1912 he introduced the concept of isotope and in 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize of Chemistry.

    HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Soddy, Frederick English physical chemist who pioneered research into atomic disintegration and coined the term isotope . He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1921 for investigating the origin and nature of isotopes. The displacement law, introduced by Soddy in 1913, explains the changes in atomic mass and atomic number for all the radioactive intermediates in the decay processes. After his chemical discoveries, Soddy spent some 40 years developing a theory of energy economics, which he called Cartesian economics. He argued for the abolition of debt and compound interest, the nationalization of credit, and a new theory of value based on the quantity of energy contained in a thing.
