In 1986 Soyinka became the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Again under threat of arrest from the Nigerian government, he fled the country in 1994. After the death of Nigeria's military dictator (1998), Soyinka returned home, where he resumed his political activism. Soyinka's works are concerned with the tensions between spiritual and material worlds, with beliefs as the underpinnings of social relations, and with individuals' dependence on one another. His widely performed plays often highlight the problems of daily life in Africa; best known are Death and the King's Horseman (1975) and A Play of Giants (1984), a satiric attack on contemporary Africa. His novels include

NATURAL EQUITY - That which is founded in natural justice, in honesty and
right, and which arises ex aequo et bono. It corresponds precisely with the
definition of justice or natural law, which is a constant and perpetual will to give
to every man what is his. This kind of equity embraces so wide a range, that
human tribunals have never attempted to enforce it. Every code of laws has left
many matters of natural justice or equity wholly unprovided for, from the
difficulty of framing general rules to meet them, from the almost impossibility of
enforcing them, and from the doubtful nature of the policy of attempting to give a legal sanction to duties of imperfect obligation, such as charity, gratitude, or kindness. -'Lectric Law Library For all I know, Wole Soyinka may be a very fine playwright; I've never seen nor read one of his plays. Incontro col Premio Nobel per la Letteratura
Wole Soyinka

    Conversations with Wole Soyinka
    Edited by Biodun Jeyifo
"I believe implicitly that any work of art which opens out the horizons of the human mind, the human intellect, is by its very nature a force for change, a medium for change." Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka is the most prominent writer from the African continent and one of the greatest living playwrights in the English language. His plays have been produced by the leading professional and repertory companies and stages in the English-speaking world including the National Theatre in Britain and the Lincoln Center in New York. At the same time, Soyinka has been the most consistent campaigner against civil and human rights violations and abuses, on occasion using his drama, poetry, and essays to speak out powerfully and eloquently in defense of the freedom of ordinary citizens and of the conscience and autonomy of the African continent's writers and intellectuals. Featuring interviews with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Anthony Appiah, and the editor, among others

Wole Soyinka, who is known for his literary works, will speak about his journey through life. by Beth Francesco
    The Shorthorn news editor
Wole Soyinka knows how to break down obstacles.
The Nobel Laureate is known worldwide for his literary works and political activism, something that history associate professor Alusine Jalloh said makes him an inspiration to students.
Essentially a playwright, he has also written essays and poetry and has directed in the theater. He writes about his life and the political oppression he faced while in Nigeria, where he was raised.
Honors College Dean Carolyn Barros said honors classes have enjoyed reading one of his several autobiographies.
His ability to do so, Jalloh said, is what makes him an accessible inspiration to all people who listen to him. Soyinka is expected to discuss his life and how he started out in Nigeria and the journey he took to become a Nobel Laureate.
After being imprisoned from 1967 to 1969 for his political views during the Nigerian Civil War, Soyinka began to write prolifically exploring the African world view. Because of his strong activism, Jalloh said, Soyinka spent most of his imprisonment in solitary confinement. His role in politics and activism is what Jalloh hopes students will explore during the lecture.

His often satirical, seemingly discordant mix of traditional myth and European modernism has attracted both praise and criticism from fellow-countrymen and the international literary community. His involvement in Nigerian political life started in his early teens. He chronicled the political upheaval and its effects on his adolescence and early adulthood in the autobiographical Ibadan

    Oppose Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal
Revolutionary Worker #990, January 17, 1999 South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has written an open letter to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge requesting clemency for political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is facing execution. The letter was cosigned by Nigerian author Dr. Wole Soyinka. Both Archbishop Tutu and Dr. Wole Soyinka are Nobel Prize laureates. The letter refers the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's recent decision to reject Mumia Abu-Jamal's legal appeals. It says: "The law has taken its course, now it is time for humanity to prevail. We earnestly plead with you for clemency. Reach out to him with the gift of life. Wield the authority conferred upon you by the good people of Pennsylvania on behalf of the highest cherished virtues of which humanity is capablecompassion and mercy." Since late November, this letter has been widely circulated by the Bruderhof community and others. Many prominent people have added their names to the request, including four more Nobel Prize laureates. The following people had signed this clemency appeal as of January 7, 1999: Dorothy Allison, author
