Wendell Meredith Stanley By:Danielle S. Wendell Meredith Stanley was born on August 16, 1904 in the small town of Ridgeville, Indiana. Wendell Stanley attended an advanced school of education called Earlham College and proceeded to graduate with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1926, the same year that he had entered the college. The following year Wendell Stanley entered the University of Illinois, where he received a Master of Science degree. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1929. He continued working at Illinois University as a research associate and later as an instructor. In 1948, Stanley was voted Professor of Biochemistry and also appointed Director of the Virus Laboratory. And during 1948-1953 he was the Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry. Wendell Stanley provided and demonstrated that viruses can be crystallized. For his wonderful biochemistry work in proving that viruses can be crystallized Stanley won the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Wendell Stanley shared the prize with James Bachelor Sumners and John Northrop. James Sumners was a successful biochemist and John Northrop had previously provided that enzymes can be and are crystallized proteins. Stanley and his co.- workers in World War Two began questing for an improved and better vaccine for the flu. A time later Stanley was recorded to have provided an extremely improved and effective vaccine. In 1948 Stanley joined the faculty of the Berkley University of Ca.

British geophysicist Southport, Lancashire, who was the first to discover evidence of the periodic polar reversals of the Earth's magnetic field. In the 1950s he was a pioneer in the fledgling discipline of paleomagnetism, or remanent magnetism, the study of the residual magnetism. He also made substantial contributions to various fields, including convection in the Earth and Moon, the shape and magnetic fields of the Moon and planets, magnetohydrodynamics of the Earth’s core, earth currents, changes in the length of the day and polar wandering, continental drift and plate tectonics. He was murdered , aged 73, when he disturbed a thief in his motel room in San Diego, while on a US lecture tour. Hendrik Christoffel van de Hulst Born 19 Nov 1918
Dutch astronomer who predicted theoretically the 21-centimetre radio waves produced by interstellar hydrogen atoms. His calculations later proved valuable in mapping the Milky Way Galaxy and were the basis for radio astronomy during its early development.

d. June 15, 1971, Salamanca, Spain American biochemist who received (with John Northrop and James Sumner ) the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1946 for his work in the purification and crystallization of viruses, thus demonstrating their molecular structure. Stanley obtained his doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1929. He worked from 1932 to 1948 at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) facilities in Princeton, N.J. In 1935 Stanley crystallized tobacco mosaic virus (TMV, the causative agent of a plant disease) and showed that it is a rod-shaped aggregate of protein and nucleic acid molecules. His work enabled other scientists, utilizing methods of X-ray diffraction, to ascertain unambiguously the precise molecular structures and the modes of propagation of several viruses. While a professor of biochemistry and director of the laboratory for virus research at the University of California, Berkeley (1948-71)
