Latvian Academy of Sciences REGULATIONS OF THE MAGDA AND HERMANN STAUDINGER FUND OF THE LATVIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES 1. In accordance with Article 6.4 of the Statutes of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, the Latvian Academy of Sciences at its November 28, 1995 Senate meeting established its internal Magda and Hermann Staudinger Fund. 2. The Fund is formed by donations of Honorary member LAS Magda Staudinger-Woit to the Latvian Academy of Sciences which have been derived from the interest of the deposit of Hermann Staudinger's Nobel Prize. 3. No other resources are used for the implementation of the goals of the above Fund. 4. The resources of the Fund are disposed taking into account the following suggestions of Honorary member LAS Magda Staudinger-Woit: 4.1. resources of the Fund are paid out to retired LAS members; 4.2. there may be outlays for other purposes (scholarships, project expenditures, etc.). 5. The suggestions are prepared by LAS Divisions, they are evaluated by the Social Committee of the LAS Senate, allotment of the resources from the Fund is made by the Presidium of the LAS, the LAS Senate and Honorary member LAS Magda Staudinger-Woit are regularly informed about these activities. 6. The LAS Presidium performs the functions of the Board of the Fund, Magda Staudinger-Woit is honorary member of the Board of this Fund. Resources of the Fund are managed by the LAS Board.

A plaque marking the designation was presented to the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, on April 19, 1999 for installation at the Hermann Staudinger House, which houses the Institute. According to American Chemical Society President Edel Wasserman, "in this international chemical landmark designation celebrating the foundation of modern polymer science, we are marking one of the great scientific advances of the 20th century. It has led to wide-ranging technological advances affecting all of us." Staudinger's initial findings created a stir in the international chemical community when he postulated, in 1920, that materials such as natural rubber have very high molecular weight-weights his contemporaries considered gigantic and unlikely. In a paper entitled, "Über Polymerisation," Staudinger presented several reactions that form high molecular weight molecules by linking together a large number of small molecules in a reaction he called "polymerization." During polymerization, individual repeating units join together like a long string of pearls. In 1922, Staudinger named his new concept "macromolecules," covering both synthetic and natural polymers, the key to a wide range of modern polymeric materials and innovative applications.

His father, a professor of philosophy at Darmstadt advised him to study chemistry to prepare for a career in botany. He studied at Darmstadt, Munich and Halle and obtained his doctorate in 1903. He was appointed associate professor at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, moved to Zurich in 1912 and finally to the University of Freeburg in 1926. Following work for BASF on the synthesis of isoprene in 1910, he recognised that the current theories for the structure of natural rubber were incorrect. The controversies surrounding naturally occurring large molecules and experimental difficulties in studying them led him to look at materials based on simpler molecules such as styrene. Staudinger introduced the concept of macromolecules, a term which he coined, and polymerisation in May 1922, in a report which appeared in
