http://www.info-europe.fr/europe.web/seb.dir/seb03.dir/stresemann/stresemann.htm

Turmoil
Years 1920-1923 Great Depression
The Weimar Republic
the Golden Twenties, 1924-1928

When Germany's young democracy survived the turbulent year of 1923, things turned to the better. Although unemployment began to rise after the currency reform, the economy stabilized.
GUSTAV STRESEMANN, Germany's minister of foreign affairs, sought to end Germany's international isolation. In 1922 Germany and the USSR signed the TREATY OF RAPALLO, which provided the German army with the opportunity to train with weaponry it was not supposed to have, according to the Treaty of Versailles (the army, and Germany's government continued to ignore the Treaty it regarded unjust and enforced). In 1925 Germany and France signed the TREATY OF LOCARNO. In this treaty, Germany recognized it's new borders in the west, thus accepting that Alsace-Lorraine was French. The French agreed to withdraw the forces occupying the Ruhrgebiet and Rhineland step by step (1925-1930). The city of Cologne was evacuated by the French in 1926. In 1926, Germany and the USSR signed a PACT OF FRIENDSHIP. Germany was admitted to the LEAGUE OF NATIONS. Gustav Stresemann was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1926.
Germany's plight during the post-war years had resulted in international efforts to deal with the reparations, still a lasting burden on Germany's economy. Several plans (Young, Briand-Kellogg) were made to alleviate the burden.
