Swedish accelerators take a look at the past In the years immediately after the Second World War, several countries that were pushing to develop more powerful particle accelerators created an exclusive club. A recent symposium in Uppsala looked back to the first Swedish post-war accelerators.
The Svedberg Lab
The first cyclotron in Sweden was a small 80 cm device built in 1938 at the Nobel Institute in Stockholm and capable of accelerating deuterons to 7 MeV. After the Second World War, an ambitious new machine at Uppsala took energies into a new domain.
The 50th anniversary of accelerator-based research at Uppsala, on 8 December 1999, merited a jubilee symposium. Gunnar Tibell, Sven Kullander and Arne Johansson looked back, while Bo Höistad, Göran Possnert, Nils Olsson, Jörgen Carlsson and Curt Ekström surveyed the present scene and looked to the future.
The first two copies of a new book (in Swedish), relating half a century of accelerator-based activities in Uppsala and edited by Torsten Lindqvist, was handed to the vice-chancellor of the university, Bo Sundqvist, and to Helge Tyrén, former professor of high-energy physics.
In the early 1940s, Tyrén, a student of 1926 Nobel Chemistry Laureate Theodor Svedberg, had constructed a neutron generator for the production of radionuclides. In Svedberg's discussions with the main customer of these radionuclides, gynaecology professor John Naeslund, plans emerged for a more powerful accelerator - a cyclotron - to increase the quantities of radioactive substances.

Feature: August 2002 Personal prejudices and a lack of understanding by the Nobel-prize committee left the pioneers of quantum mechanics unrewarded until the discovery of antimatter in 1932.
Prize and prejudices
In 1933 the Nobel prizes seemed of little importance compared with the global economic depression and the rise to power of the Nazis, but many physicists still kept a watchful eye on Stockholm. Their bewilderment and chagrin over the most recent decisions by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences had fuelled anticipation. No prize had been awarded in physics since 1930, yet recent theoretical and experimental achievements had led to a revolutionary new quantum-mechanical depiction of the atom. Would the Academy finally acknowledge these accomplishments? When the Academy eventually announced its decision in November, the results pleased some, angered others and puzzled many. The prize reserved from 1932 went to Werner Heisenberg alone for "the creation of quantum mechanics, the application of which has

American oceanographer who is a devout advocate of public education regarding the importance of the oceans as an essential environmental habitat. In 1990, Earle was named the first woman to serve as chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the agency that conducts underwater research, manages fisheries, and monitors marine spills. She was among the first underwater explorers to make use of modern self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) gear, and identified many new species of marine life. With her former husband, Graham Hawkes, Earle designed and built a submersible craft that could dive to unprecedented depths of 3,000 feet. E.M. Purcell Born 30 Aug 1912; died 7 Mar 1997.
American physicist who shared, with Felix Bloch of the United States, the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1952 for his independent discovery (1946) of nuclear magnetic resonance in liquids and in solids. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has become widely used to study the molecular structure of pure materials and the composition of mixtures.
