The Universal Lessons of Wislawa Szymborska

How did the Germans invade Poland?
The soldiers lined up at the border and marched
in backwards so everyone thought they were leaving!

Aw c'mon, it's just a little ethnic humor. No harm, no foul. No real offense intended. And of course it's been done to others. I grew tired of hearing gorilla jokes, always set in deep, dark Africa. I'd chuckle every now and then, until I replaced "gorilla" with another, more American, target. Yes, the N-word kind of brought it all home.
Nevertheless, the Polish people have put up with a lot throughout history, including invasion by Germany and control by the Soviet Union. And the jokes. When an object lesson in stupidity was offered, and when use of blacks or some other ethnic or religious minority was inconvenient, just use those stupid Poles. Hey, even the Polka brings derisive smiles to the face.
My theory has been that great beauty is borne of suffering. I've seen it among blacks in America. I definitely hear it when listening to the music of South Africa over the last twentyfive years. And now, I've found it in the words of Wislawa Szymborska, a 73 year old poet who lives in Cracow, and who just happened to win the 1996 Nobel Prize for Poetry.
She writes with such stunning simplicity, directness and clarity, that only her words do her justice. To wit, my favorite

In 1931 her family moved to Cracow where from 1945 to 1948 she studied Polish language and sociology at the Jagiellonian University . From that time Szymorska loved Cracow and is inseparably connected with this historic city. In the early she gained a journalist post in a literature review magazine called "Zycie Literackie". Then she worked in some other literature magazines - she has always had her own column for decades; the articles were later published in book form. Since her debut in 1945 she has published over a dozen poetic books. She was awarded the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Award in 1991 and later The Herder Award. Most importantly she is the laureate of

Polish poet awarded Nobel Prize in literature
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska was named winner of the Nobel Prize for literature October 3. She was cited for her "poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality."
Szymborska, 73, has also published book reviews and translations of French poetry. She lives in the Polish city of Krakow. "I am very happy, stunned and frightened," she said on nationwide Radio Zet. "I'm afraid I will not have a quiet life now. It is hard to believe but I was never hoping for an award." Tadeusz Nyczek, a writer and literary critic, told the Zycie daily that Szymborska was "Poland's best female poet since the war." In its citation announcing the winner, the Swedish Academy said, "The stylistic variety in her poetry makes it extremely difficult to translate, but there nevertheless exist a number of works in other languages so that the major part of her poetry is accessible to a wider readership." The academy also said that Szymborska had disclaimed the work with which she made her debut in 1952 and its successor in 1954, both attempts to conform to social realism at a time when communist censorship held sway over Poland.

The poetry of the current Nobel laureate, Wislawa Szymborska, answers to just that description, happily so for the great many of us who know her native Polish only as an alien tangle of chafing consonants and briery inflections. Szymborska, whose poem "A Word on Statistics" appears in the May, 1997, Atlantic
That was my own experience, at any rate, when first happening upon V iew with a Grain of Sand (1995), a volume of Szymborska's selected poems translated by Stanislaw Baranczak and Claire Cavanagh that appeared a year or so before the Swedish Academy catapulted Szymborska's name into the headlines. The book has no introduction and contains a sparse three lines of biographical lowdown, unusual restraint in our age of overkill but a fitting tribute to Szymborska's innate effervescence. Even the uninitiated American ear should have little trouble picking up the conviviality of her poetry right away its comic sparkle, its jaunty conversational tempo, its immunity from pretense, its exuberant range of subjects and sympathies and shouldn't have to strain hard to detect the resonant vibrations beneath those inviting surfaces. This is not to suggest that Szymborska sounds anything like a poet writing from out of our own vernacular. There is almost no autobiographical element in these poems, and very little that can be safely ascribed to personal or intimate entanglement. They have nothing to confess not with well-scrubbed sincerity, at least and what they have to declare is usually merrily skewed or consummately oblique. Most notably of all, perhaps, they are more vigorously intellectual than the staple lyric poetry that dominates the American scene, more at ease with metaphysical speculation than with the raw materials of emotion and experience. Yet far from being stumbling blocks, these qualities account for much that is attractive and arresting in her verse. Szymborska is an inspired ironist of the first order, a warm and wily creature of reason who cherishes the life of the mind much too ardently to let any excursion into ideas turn into a forced march.

Winner of the Heldt Prize for Translation. A new translation of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet, with an introduction by Czeslaw Milosz. This long-awaited volume samples the full range of Wislawa Szymborska's major themes: the ironies of love, the wonders of nature's beauty, and the illusory character of art. Szymborska's voice emerges as that of a gentle subversive, self-deprecating in its wit, yet graced with a gift for coaxing the extraordinary out of the ordinary.
Wislawa Szymborska was born in Western Poland in 1923. Her poems have been translated (and published in book form) in many international languages. She is the Goethe Prize winner (1991) and Herder Prize winner (1995). She has a degree of Honorary Doctor of Letters of Poznan University (1995). In 1996 she received the Polish PEN Club prize, and is the1996 Nobel Laureate in Literature. Joanna Trzeciak 's translations have appeared in The New Yorker and other magazines. Trzeciak received the Heldt Prize for translation of this volume. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

Born in Bnin (near Poznan) in 1923, she has been connected throughout her life with Cracow, where she studied and still lives and works. A poet and essayist, Wislawa Szymborska won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. She is known throughout the world thanks to translations published in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, Swedish, Bulgarian, Albanian and Chinese.
Szymborska writes sparingly; she is reckoned to have written no more than 250 poems. Perhaps this accounts for the fact that almost every one is a masterpiece. At least since the mid-1950s, Szymborska has held a place among the very finest Polish and European poets.

BABY ADOLF AND THE NOBEL PRIZE
I t seems few people know the writings of the new Nobel Prize for Literature, Wislawa Szymborska, from Poland. The usual ignorant crackpot who acts as Le Monde literary critic, Patrick Kechichian, says her "work has been built away from the political somersaults of her country". Here is an example, culled from Internet : HITLER'S FIRST PHOTOGRAPH by Wislawa Szymborska And who's this little fellow in his itty-bitty robe? That's tiny baby Adolf, the Hitlers' little boy! Will he grow up to be an L.L.D.? Or a tenor in Vienna's Opera House? Whose teensy hand is this, whose little ear and eye and nose? Whose tummy full of milk, we just don't know: printer's, doctor's, merchant's, priest's? Where will those tootsy-wootsies finally wander? To a garden, to a school, to an office, to a bride? Maybe to the Buergermeister's daughter? Precious little angel, mommy's sunshine, honey bun. While he was being born, a year ago, there was no dearth of signs on the earth and in the sky: spring sun, geraniums in windows

OCT. 4, 1996 WORLD/NATION Polish poet wins nobel prize for literature STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) A shy, 73-year-old Polish poet who disavowed her Stalinist past to become an inspiration for movie makers and rock bands won the Nobel Prize for literature Thursday. Wislawa Szymborska had gone for a walk in the southern Polish holiday resort of Zakopane just before the Swedish Academy announced the $1.12 million award. "I am very happy, I am honored, but at the same time stunned and a little bit frightened with what awaits me," she told Poland's Radio Zet. "I'm afraid I will not have a quiet life for some time now, and this is what I prize the most." Arguably Poland's most popular poet, Szymborska's work inspired the 1994 movie "Red" as well as providing lyrics for Polish rock stars. Critics say she is both deeply political and witty, using humor in unexpected ways. The citation described her as a "Mozart of poetry," a woman who mixed elegance of language with "the fury of Beethoven" and who was not afraid to tackle serious subjects with levity. Szymborska's later poetry is revenge of sorts against her first two books, published in 1952 and 1954, both attempts to conform to social realism at a time when Communist censorship held sway over Poland.
