Wislawa Szymborska (1996)
Wislawa Szymborska was born in Kornik in Western Poland on 2 July 1923. Since 1931 she has been living in Krakow, where during 1945-1948 she studied Polish Literature and Sociology at the Jagiellonian University. Szymborska made her début in March 1945 with a poem "Szukam slowa" (I am Looking for a Word) in the daily "Dziennik Polski". During 1953-1981 she worked as poetry editor and columnist in the Kraków literary weekly "Zycie Literackie" where the series of her essays "Lektury nadobowiazkowe" appeared (the series has been renewed lately in the addition to "Gazeta Wyborcza"-"Gazeta o Ksiazkach"). The collection "Lektury nadobowiazkowe" was published in the form of a book four times. Her poems have been translated (and published in book form) in English, German, Swedish, Italian, Danish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Czech, Slovakian, Serbo-Croatian, Romanian, Bulgarian and other languages. They have also been published in many foreign anthologies of Polish poetry.

About Miracle Fair: Selected Poems of Wislawa Szymborska In awarding her the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996, the Swedish Academy praised Wislawa Szymborska for her breadth of inspiration and stylistic grace. Here, in this long-awaited volume of selected poems, translator Joanna Trzeciak samples the full range of Szymborska's major themes: the ironies of love, history lessons unlearned, our parochial human perspective and the admirable desire to transcend it, the wonders of nature's beauty and bounty, the place of humanity in the cosmos, and the illusory character of art. Szymborska's voice emerges as that of a gentle subversive, of a humanitarian attuned to human flaws and flourishes in equal measure, self-deprecating in its wit, yet graced with the gift for coaxing the extraordinary out of the ordinary both in life and in language.
Edward Hirsch
Richard Wilbur
"Translations (Trzeciak is the fourth, I think, to give us a Szymborska in English) are the sign of a poet's continuing vitality, and by the latest evidence, this Tragic Comedian is close-mouthed with vehement life, as she might say. Each new poem won for our idiom (and there are many here) is to be relished: a punctual delight."
