(contributed by P.Ravi Sarma) Born: Calcutta, May 7, 1861 Died: Calcutta, August 7, 1941 Nobel Prize: 1913 Literature for his work "Gitanjali", for the English version, published in 1912. Poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, essayist, musician, artist, actor, director, educator, philosopher and activist (rather than a politician), Rabindranath Tagore was fourteenth of fifteen children born to Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He started writing when he was eight and published his first work of poetry in 1875. He founded Santi Niketan in 1901 and it later became the Viswa Bharathi University in 1918. He was knighted in 1915 but renounced it in 1919 in protest following the Jhullianwallah Bagh massacre by the British near Amritsar in Punjab. The award of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Rabindranath Tagore was announced on November 13, 1913 by Harold Hjarne, Chairman of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy. Tagore, then 52 years old, was the first Asian to receive the award. It was given for Tagore's English version of "Gitanjali". Gitanjali was initially published in Bengali, Tagore's mother tongue, in 1910 as a book of poems. He translated selections from the book into English in free verse and published the work in 1912.

With Hellen Keller Rabindranath Tagore Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet, writer, philosopher was the ambassador of Indian culture to the rest of the world. He is probably the most prominent figure in the cultural world of Indian subcontinent and the first Asian man to be awarded with Nobel prize. Even though he is mainly known as a poet, his multifaceted talent showered upon different branches of art, such as, novels, short stories, dramas, articles, essays, painting etc. And his songs, popularly known as Rabindrasangeet , have an eternal appeal and is permanently placed in the heart of the Bengalis. He was a social reformer, patriot and above all, a great humanitarian and philosopher. India and Bangladesh - the national anthems of these two countries are his composition.

30. About Rabindranath Tagore
English Gitanjali, and it's publication in 1912 and the award of the nobel Prizefor Poems of rabindranath tagore(English translation) and in Bengali script

R ABINDRANATH T AGORE
Tagore's literary life extended over sixty years, and he reminds one of Victor Hugo in the copiousness and variety of his work: over one thousand poems; nearly two dozen plays and play-lets; eight novels; eight or more volumes of short stories; more than two thousands songs, of which he wrote both the words and the music; and a mass of prose on literary, social, religious, political, and other topics. Add to these his English translations; his paintings; his travels and lecture-tours in Asia, America, and Europe; and his activities as educationist, as social and religious reformer, and as politician- and there you have, judged by quantity alone, the life-work of a Titan. This is not to say that his genius was no more than the capacity for taking infinite pains; but to note the element of steel and concrete that went to his making, and thus to dispose of the legend, that has grown in some quarters in recent years, of Tagore the pale-lily poet of ladies' table. Not that the legend is entirely baseless. Tagore's almost continuous iteration, in his English translations, of the softer side of his poetry and his wistful-mystical message, is partly responsible for it. After having won world-fame with the mystical-devotional poetry of the English

Since my childhood I became fascinated by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's description of the Ichamati river in Pabna in his famous book Glimpses of Bengal.
I learnt to swim not in a swimming school of European standard but in the muddy water of Ichamati river. This river divides the Pabna town into two parts. It was then late fifties, my grandfather liked very much if I accompanied him bathing and swimming with him. I could learn breaststroke, butterfly and underwater swimming. On the way he used to help me recognising wild plants, herbs and shurbs of Bangla. One day he narrated to me that this Ichamati river was vital to the English indigo planters.Sadhupara, our heart and abode was once famous for Indigoplantation. Not far from our house in Sadhupara I saw many boats loaded with jute and rice bound for unkown destination in 1960 along the Ichamati. Still today one finds remnents of the Nilkuthi(Estatehouse for the indigoplanters) in Sadhupara on the bank of river Ichamati. He said to me the Englishman had built London almost exclusively from the money earned from Indigo produced in Bangla. In late teenage, of my father I got a birthday present of Tagore' s famous book Chinnopatra(Glimpses of Bengal). here I liked Tagore's description of Ichamati river. I memorised them word for word, of course in Bangla.

In the philatelic world he is still an endless curio. Bangladesh honoured him by issuing a stamp with his late-age portrait in an elliptical frame and the picturesque view of Shelidah Kuthibari(estate house) situated on a little land enclave on the river Padma about 15 km south-west of Pabna , 1991. Bangladesh Postal Authority commited a could be avoidable mistake by splitting his name as "Rabindra Nath" , a style which Tagore self abhored. Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was a multi-faceted literary colossus. He was born in Calcutta on 6th May 1861 and died on 7th August 1941. He was a prolific producer of poems, songs, stories, dance-dramas, and sketches. His collection of poems, "Gitanjali", won him the Nobel prize for literature in 1913. In a short article of this nature it is difficult to encompass all his achievements. These are better described by a set of links at the bottom of this page. In the context of the Brahmo Samaj Rabindranath was both influenced by and influenced the Brahmo Samaj: His grandfather, Prince Dwarakanath Tagore, was a friend of Raja Ram Mohan Roy , the founder of the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath's father was Maharshi Debendranath Tagore , who led the Brahmo Samaj following Raja Ram Mohan Roy's death. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, in particular, had a great impact on Rabindranath.
