EXHIBITION DEVOTED TO RABINDRANATH TAGORE OPENS IN RUSSIA'S CAPITAL
An exhibition devoted to the 140th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, an Indian writer, humanist, public leader, and Nobel Prize winner, was opened at the Russian State Library in Moscow.
The exhibition displays books from the State Library's Fine Arts Publications Department and Museum, as well as music scores. The photographs devoted to Tagore's life and work were provided by the Indian Embassy in Russia.
Tagore (1861-1941) wrote both poetry and prose. His lyrical poems are known for their civic spirit and romantic elation. Tagore's stories, novels, plays and works on political journalism are directed against feudal and religious vestiges, the rightlessness of women, racial discrimination, and are permeated with ideas of patriotism and national liberation. Apart from being the author of books on literature, philosophy and religion, he has written the text of the Republic of India's anthem. In 1913 Rabindranath Tagore received a Nobel Prize for literature.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861 or the 25th day of the month of Baisakh in the year 1268 (Bengali lunar calendar) in Calcutta, in a cultured and wealthy family. The poet's early life was spent in an atmosphere of religion and arts, literature, music and painting. In 1901 he founded the school, Santiniketan, at Bolpur in Birbhum. The school was a great success and gave birth to Viswabharati. It became a great seat of culture and learning. In 1913 he received the Nobel Prize for literature following the publication of his collection of poems Gitanjali. Rabindranath Tagore's contribution to Bengali language and literature is unparallel. He wrote many novels, short stories, plays and poems. Some of Tagore's novels include Bauthakuranir Hat, Rajarshi, Naukadubi, Chokher-Bali, Gora and Ghare Baire. Tagore was an ardent patriot. His most intense period of political activity was in the years following 1905, when the agitation against the partition of Bengal was at its highest. He renounced his knighthood in 1919 as a protest against the Amritsar massacre. His patriotic poems and songs, India's national anthem Jana Gana Mana have passed into the common heritage of his country.

About Nobel Laureate, Rabindra Nath Tagore
We are greatly pleased to present the poems from GITANJALI by Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore. His short biography follows. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), was an Indian poet, philosopher, and Nobel laureate. He was born in Calcutta, into a wealthy family, the son of the philosopher Debendranath Tagore. He began to write poetry as a child; his first book appeared when he was 17 years old. After a brief stay in England (1878) to study law, he returned to India, where he rapidly became the most important and popular author of the colonial era, writing poetry, short stories, novels, and plays. He composed several hundred popular songs and in 1929 also began painting. A dedicated internationalist and educator, Tagore established a school (1901) in his estate, Santiniketan, in Bengal, to teach a blend of Eastern and Western philosophies. In 1921 his school was expanded into an international university, Visva-Bharati. He also traveled and lectured throughout the world. Tagore wrote primarily in Bengali, but translated many of his works into English himself. Critics agree that his works are much more effective in the original. Tagore's writing is highly imagistic, deeply religious and imbued with his love of nature and his homeland. He was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in literature.

Rabindranath Tagore : First Asian to receive Nobel Prize Rabindranath Tagore was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj , which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads . He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. In He became the first Asian to receive Nobel Prize for literature . Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years

    http://hot.ee/noa/and.htm
    R. Tagore and Estonia
In 1944 our famous theologian and writer Uku Masing stated that at the time when R. Tagore’s books began to be translated and published in the West there were only a few countries where he was so well known as in Estonia. And the fact that among our people "Gitanjali" was much more spread than the works of most European writers showed that he was really very important to us.
The nearest countries to Estonia which he visited were Sweden (1921 and 1926), Austria and Czechoslovakia (1921 and 1926), Norway (1926), Hungary (1926), the Soviet Union (1930). The nearest place to Estonia was St.Petersburg. From among the Finno-Ugric countries he visited only Hungary. Anyway at the beginning of the 20th century after the English version of "Gitanjali" (1912) and especially the Nobel prize for literature he became widely known in our country. The translations of many of his poems were published in journals and newspapers and every literature-lover considered it his duty to read or translate something written by him.
In 1922 the play "Post Office" was staged in Tallinn (restaged 60 years later).
