Selected Letters of Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore, Edited by Krishna Dutta, Andrew Robinson
In stock Interest in the life and work of Nobel prize-winning writer Rabindranath Tagore is now enjoying a revival after many years of neglect outside India. He wrote thousands of letters in both Bengali and English. Most of the significant Bengali letters have been published in the half-century since his death, but not translated, while few noteworthy English letters are in print. This book, which consists of about 350 letters spanning Tagore’s entire life, a quarter of them in English translation, is the first to make his letters available to English readers. They have been especially selected to show as many facets of his experience, interests and ideas as possible. Students of history, politics and literature will find them an invaluable tool, not only for an understanding of the complexity of Tagore’s personality, but also of the times in which he lived.
Reviews
‘The Selected Letters are a triumphant and exemplary work of scholarship, expertly annotated and beautifully designed.’ Patrick French, Daily Telegraph

Born in Kolkata on May 7, 1861, Rabindranath was the youngest of fourteen children. His father, Debendranath Tagore , was a Sanskrit scholar and a leading member of the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath's early education was imparted at home. In school, while others use to learn their lessons, he would slip into more exciting world of dreams. Inspired by his older nephew, he wrote his first poem when he was hardly seven. At the age of seventeen, his first book of poems was published. In 1878, he went to England for further studies but returned back in just seventeen months as he did not find the studies interesting.
Besides poetry, Tagore wrote songs (both the words and the melodies), short stories, novels, plays (in both prose and verse), essays on a wide range of topics including literary criticism, polemical writing, travelogues, memoirs and books for children. Apart from a few books containing lectures given abroad and personal letters to friends who did not read Bengali, the bulk of his voluminous literary output is in Bengali. Gitanjali(1912), Tagore's own translation of the poetic prose from the Bengali Gitanjali(1910) won him the Nobel prize for Literature in 1913. In 1883, he got married to

Rabindranath Tagore and I Compare Schools "Rabindranath Tagore taught us to sing, as a natural form of self-expression, like the birds." Bhola Nath, a bright fourteen-year-old lad at my Ranchi school, gave me this explanation after I had complimented him one morning on his melodious outbursts. With or without provocation, the boy poured forth a tuneful stream. He had previously attended the famous Tagore school of "Santiniketan" (Haven of Peace) at Bolpur. "The songs of Rabindranath have been on my lips since early youth," I told my companion. "All Bengal, even the unlettered peasants, delights in his lofty verse." Bhola and I sang together a few refrains from Tagore, who has set to music thousands of Indian poems, some original and others of hoary antiquity.

Biography
Rabindranath Tagore
Poet and writer India Born 7 May 1861
Died 7 Aug 1941
Tagore was the son of Maharishi Debendra Nath Tagore. The Tagores were a famous family of religious and social reformers, musicians and artists, and Rabindranath was brought up in a literary atmosphere. He was educated privately and at the age of 24 went to the country to take charge of his father's estates, where he wrote many of his works. In 1877 he paid a short visit to England. Tagore began writing Bengali lyrics at a very early age and in 1890 published his first volume of poetry, 'Manasi'. From 1891-95 he was the chief contributor to Sadhana, a prominent Bengali literary journal. To this period belongs his early group of dramas, 'Chitrangada', 'Sacrifice', 'King and Queen', and 'Malini', and two collections of lyrics, 'Chitra', which contains some of his finest work, and 'Sonar Tari'. His most celebrated collection of lyrics, 'Gitanjali', was published in 1909, and in the following year 'The King of the Dark Chamber', a profoundly moving drama.
In 1912 he again visited England, taking with him an English translation of 'Gitanjali'. Its greatness was at once recognized by WB Yeats and William Rothenstein and on its appearance in 1913 it received tremendous acclaim in Europe and America. Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and was knighted in 1915. He spent much of the latter half of his life in travel, and visited nearly every country in Europe and Asia, as well as the United States.

Rabindranath Tagore was Born in Calcutta in the year 1861 into a wealthy Brahmin family. His grandfather, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore ( 1794-1846 ), was a prominent and wealthy man who financed the Calcutta Medical College. His father, Maharishi Debendranath Tagore ( 1817-1905 ), was a scholar. His mother, Sarada Devi, passed on when Tagore was still very young. At age 22, Tagore would marry Mrinalini Devi Raichaudhuri and fathered two sons and three daughters. His sons were educated in the United States. This Cultural icon of Indian Music, Art, Literature, History and Culture would further India's Artistic legacy into a world wide phenomena. And that too, at a time when India was in struggle for its very own identity. Through his writings, Tagore would show deep compassion for India and every Indian. His early education came by way of private tutors and later at the Bengal Academy where Tagore would study Bengali literature and culture. He would later study law at the University College in London but would soon return to India without a degree. His heart was in his research and creative work which would form an everlasting imprint on the world in the years to come. Tagore dreamt of one common language for all of humanity. Thoughts of which he would later express to Albert Einstein.

Rabindranath Tagore Dr. Mohammad Omar Farooq Many luminaries of Bengal touch a Bengali’s world from childhood, but it would be surprising if the touch won't include that of Rabindranath Tagore. If Bengalis' (or Bangladeshis') early exposure to their heritage and culture often begins with " bhor holo dor kholo, khukumoni ottho re ,” it would almost invariably also include " Jol pore pata nore." The former is by Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Rebel poet of Bengal and the national poet of Bangladesh, and the second one is by none other than the world poet, Rabindranath Tagore. While it is true that the word Jol (which is used by Bengalis elsewhere) is not part of the Bangladeshi vernacular, yet, the cultural world naturally includes "Jol pore pata nore." It is quite challenging to write an article about such a well-known individual because much has already been written about him and a vast amount already exists in print. Before going any further, let me clarify my background. I am a Bengali, a Bangladeshi, and also a Muslim [ Note: Readers should not read too much into the order I have listed those ]. I state this explicitly so that the readers can relate to the background, experience, and frame of reference of my writing. Also, let alone disclaiming that I am an expert of Rabindranath; I have to admit that my knowledge and understanding of Rabindranath are very limited, which might actually be an understatement.

Hindu poet philosopher , and artist Sir Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) wrote Gitanjali and The Religion of Man and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, the first Asian to receive this honor. "The mountain remains unmoved at seeming defeat by the mist," he once said. The youngest of 14 children, he wrote his first poem when he was seven. His beautiful and poignant writings played a critical role in India 's cultural emergence in the latter 19th century. "The world speaks to me in colors , my soul answers in music ," he said.

Rabindranath Tagore at the University of Costa Rica Sol Argüello Scriba Department of Literature, University of Costa Rica It was not until 1980 that a course on Rabindranath Tagore and his work was offered at the University of Costa Rica, thanks to the emeritus professor M.A. Hilda Chen Apuy, who was largely responsible for the introduction of Asian Studies in the Literature and Philology program at the School of Modern and Classical Languages. Among the reasons that prompted Prof. Chen Apuy to choose Tagore above other Asian authors, was the fact that much of his work had already been translated to a faultless Spanish, mainly through the pens of the Spanish poet and also Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez and his wife, the North American Zenobia Camprubí. This was just the beginning of twenty years of continuous teaching on Tagore at our School, and I, as one of the first students that took this course, am a proud heir of Prof. Chen’s vision. It is impossible once you have read Tagore not to fall in love with his literature the English translations he made of his own poems are music to my ears, even if my not so fluent English only serves to give me a hint of what I am missing—, and there are so many things to cover when I first considered the writing of this article, that it would never reach its ending if I would linger on each one of them. Thus, I must content myself with answering only one question, the main reason for this article: “Why is Tagore taught at the University of Costa Rica?,” while leaving aside the infinite meanders of personal significance that Tagore has for me and for those many Costa Ricans who have discovered and rediscovered with me, semester after semester, his poetry.

May 7, 1861, Calcutta, Indiad. Aug. 7, 1941, Calcutta), Bengali poet, short-story writer, song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern India. ::Need A Great Host For Your Website?::
The son of the religious reformer Debendranath Tagore, he early began to write verses, and after incomplete studies in England in the late 1870s, he returned to India. There he published several books of poetry in the 1880s and completed Manasi (1890), a collection that marks the maturing of his genius. It contains some of his best-known poems, including many in verse forms new to Bengali, as well as some social and political satire that was critical of his fellow Bengalis. In 1901 Tagore founded an experimental school in rural West Bengal at Shantiniketan ("Abode of Peace"), where he sought to blend the best in the Indian and Western traditions. He settled permanently at the school, which became Vishva-Bharati University in 1921. Years of sadness arising from the deaths of his wife and two children between 1902 and 1907 are reflected in his later poetry, which was introduced to the West in Gitanjali, Song Offerings (1912). This book, containing Tagore's English prose translations of religious poems from several of his Bengali verse collections, including Gitañjali (1910), was hailed by W.B. Yeats and André Gide and won him the Nobel Prize in 1913. Tagore was awarded a knighthood in 1915, but he repudiated it in 1919 as a protest against the Amritsar Massacre.

Raman Ayanamsa: Venus- Venus Rath’s Comments: I find it very strange that in his book Notable Horoscopes Dr.B.V.Raman has described and justified this going abroad as being due to the dasa-Antar period of Ketu-Saturn, whereas the chart given in the same book uses Raman’s Ayanamsa according to which the Dasa-Antar are Venus-Venus. Dr Raman writes “His first voyage to Europe was in his 18th year in Ketu Dasa Saturn Bhukti. Mercury, whose results Ketu should give, owns the seventh or house of travels, while the sub-lord Saturn should give the results due to Ketu whose constellation he occupies.” Was Dr.Raman using the Lahiri Ayanamsa when he wrote this book and could the chart be replaced later? Lahiri Ayanamsa: Ketu-Saturn Chandrahari Ayanamsa: Ketu-Jupiter (Can be Ketu-Sat if the journey was between 29 March, 1879 and 5 July 1879. Rath’s Comments: If the date of travel was before 29 March 1879, then it will be quite impossible to justify foreign travel during the period of the exalted Lord of Lagna-Jupiter. In fact if somebody is abroad, then he should return home during this period. However, if the journey was after 29 March 1879, then it can be justified as per Dr Raman’s comments. Conclusion: Raman’s Ayanamsa lacks the necessary justification from his pen. Lahiri’s Ayanamsa has been proved both by Dr Raman and myself. Chandrahari Ayanamsa can stand the test of TRUTH if somebody can get us the exact date of the foreign travel (at least month).

INTRODUCTION Troilus and Cressida W.B. YEATS September 1912 GITANJALI Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life. This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new. At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable. Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill. When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would break with pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes.
