JOSHUA LEDERBERG
The Rockefeller University, New York, U.S.A.
Dr. Joshua Lederberg is among the most eminent living biologists. He can be described as one of the founders of the field of bacterial genetics, which has become a crucial research area in modern biology. Leading genetics textbooks will invariably begin the chapter on bacteria by describing the work of Lederberg and his colleagues, because prior to their research, scientists had not even established that bacteria had any means of exchanging genetic information, much less determining the mechanisms by which this process might take place. Joshua Lederberg was born in Montclair, New Jersey, and grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. He attended New York City public schools and Stuyvesant High School. He graduated from Columbia College with a B.A. (with honors) as a premedical student majoring in zoology. He then studied at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia Medical School, where he conducted research under Professor F. J. Ryan. This was the beginning of his interest in biological research. Dr. Lederberg then joined the Department of Microbiology at Yale University as a research fellow. He studied with Edward Lawrie Tatum, who had already become known for his pioneering studies of the genetics of the
