Temin, Howard Martin
(b. Dec. 10, 1934, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.d. Feb. 9, 1994, Madison, Wis.), American virologist who in 1975 shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his former professor Renato Dulbecco and another of Dulbecco's students, David Baltimore , for his codiscovery of the enzyme reverse transcriptase. While working toward his Ph.D. under Dulbecco at the California Institute of Technology, Temin began investigating how the Rous sarcoma virus causes animal cancers. One puzzling observation was that the virus, the essential component of which is ribonucleic acid (RNA), could not infect the cell if the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was stopped. Temin proposed in 1964 that the virus somehow translated its RNA into DNA, which then redirected the reproductive activity of the cell, transforming it into a cancer cell. The cell would reproduce this DNA along with its own DNA, producing more cancer cells. Skeptics pointed out that Temin's suggestion contradicted the contemporary tenet of molecular biology: that genetic information always passed from DNA to RNA, rather than the reverse. But in 1970 both Temin and Baltimore proved Temin's hypothesis correct. They identified an enzyme (reverse transcriptase) in the virus that synthesizes DNA that contains the information in the viral RNA. Temin obtained his Ph.D. in 1959, and after spending another year with Dulbecco, he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he taught and conducted research until his death.

    Temin, Howard Martin
US virologist concerned with cancer research. For his work on the genetic inheritance of viral elements he shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with David Baltimore (1938- ) and Renato Dulbecco (1914- ).
Temin was born in Philadelphia and educated at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, and the California Institute of Technology. From 1960 he worked at the University of Wisconsin, becoming professor 1969.
Temin's prizewinning research was on a virus that has a mechanism which incorporates its material into mammalian genes. He discovered that beneficial mutations outside the germ line are naturally selected and that the mechanism adds genetic information from outside into the germ line.

Roger Sperry was a corecipient (with David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel) of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their research on the workings of the brain. Sperry was particularly recognized for discovering that each brain hemisphere controls different kinds of functions.
KENNETH GEDDES WILSON (b. 1936 Kenneth Wilson was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work to construct improved theories about the transformations of matter called continuous, or second-order, phase transitions. His research led to a very general and effective mathematical strategy for understanding how complex microscopic behavior underlies gross macroscopic effects. Willy Fowler shared (with S. Chandrasekhar) the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on nucleosynthesis, the process whereby the nuclei of lighter chemical elements fuse to create heavier ones. In groundbreaking work in the late 1950s, he and his colleagues demonstrated that, starting only with the hydrogen and helium produced in the Big Bang, all the elements from carbon to uranium could be produced by the nuclear processes in stars.

Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research Howard M. Temin Obituary The following is an excerpt of the obituary on Dr. Temin published by the New York Times on Friday, February 11, 1994.
Dr. Howard M. Temin, a cancer researcher, who won the Nobel Prize for discovering an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, that overturned a central tenet of molecular biology, died of lung cancer Wednesday, at his home in Madison, Wis. He was 59. His lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, was a type not linked to smoking. Dr. Temin was an ardent crusader against smoking, even admonishing members of the audience at the Nobel Prize ceremony for smoking when he was being honored for his efforts to combat cancer.
The enzyme Dr. Temin discovered, reverse transcriptase later was critical in identifying the AIDS virus. It also became the underpinning of much of the biotechnology industry and was crucial in producing drugs like human insulin and tpa, a clot-dissolving agent that stops heart attacks in progress.
The Nobel committee cited Dr. Temin for “discoveries concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic material of the cell”. He shared the prize with Dr. Dulbecco, his former professor, and Dr. Baltimore.
