NIH Nobel Prize Winners 1968Dr. Marshall W. Nirenberg, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the key to deciphering the genetic code. Dr. Nirenberg and two other researchers, working independently, with whom he shared the prize, made major advances in understanding the chemical mechanisms by which genetic language or information is translated into various proteins that determine the nature and characteristics of all living things. Dr. Nirenberg was the first NIH Nobelist and also the first Federal employee to receive a Nobel Prize. 1970Dr. Julius Axelrod, National Institute of Mental Healthshared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two scientists from England and Swedenfor independent research into the chemistry of nerve transmission. The three were cited for their “discoveries concerning the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation.” Specifically, Dr. Axelrod found an enzyme that terminates the action of the nerve transmitter, noradrenaline. I was born on December 10, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, the second of three sons of Annette and Henry Temin. My father was an attorney, and my mother has been continually active in civic affairs, especially educational ones. My older brother, Michael, is also an attorney in Philadelphia, and my younger brother, Peter, is a Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Cambridge, Mass. I received my elementary and high school education in the public schools of Philadelphia. My specific interest in biological research was focused by summers (1949-1952) spent in a program for high school students at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, and a summer (1953) spent at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia. I attended Swarthmore College from 1951 to 1955, majoring and minoring in biology in the honors program. After another summer (1955) at the Jackson Laboratory, I became a graduate student in biology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, majoring in experimental embryology. Even today, this is an important assay for the tumerogenic potential of a virus. Temin also found that the morphology of the foci were different when genetic variants of the virus was used, leading to the important conclusion that transformation is the result of action by genes carried by the virus. Subsequent studies by others established that these are cellular genes `hijacked' by the virus, whose function has been modified. Thus it was realized that modification of normal cellular genes can lead to cancer. the viral RNA genome is used as a template to make a DNA copy that is integrated into the host genome. The DNA provirus is then used as a template that is transcribed to give the viral RNA copies.

Nobel Prize It is the Swedish- Norwegian foundation ( which is situated in Stockholm). It was founded in 1900 year like a fulfillment of the wish of Alfred Nobel's testament. All income of this foundation is devoted to grant of equal-value international prize. They are awarded every year in five domains: in the realms of physics and chemistry the prizes are granted by Royal Swedish Academy of Science in the realm of medicine the prize is granted by Royal Swedish Institute of Medicine and Surgery. in the realm of literature the prize is granted by Swedish Academy of Literature in the realm of economy the prize is granted by Swedish Bank - for activity for the world-wide peace is granted by Norwegian Nobel's Committee (attached to Norwegian Parliament. These awards are granted in Stockholm and Oslo on 10th December (it is the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death).
