Joseph John Thomson was born in a Manchester suburb (4) on December 18, 1856 (3). His father was a bookseller and publisher (4) who died when Joseph was sixteen (3). When Joseph was 34 he married Miss Rose Paget on January 22, 1890 (3). They had two children; George Paget Thomson and Joan Paget Thomson (3). George also became a physicist and studied in the same area as Joseph (3). Joseph John Thomson died on August 30, 1940 (3). Joseph went to Owens College in Manchester (3) to study engineering (4). He was unable to apprentice due to his fathers death and the lack of money (4). He did however finish the engineering course at Owens College (4). One of his professors at Owens College encouraged Joseph to apply for the Trinity College prize fellowship. Joseph applied and won based on his thesis, which states, "electric charge diminishes evaporation from a small drop and may allow it to grow under conditions in which an uncharged drop would disappear" (4). He then went to school at Trinity College in Cambridge (4) on a mathematics scholarship (3). He finished his degree in physics in 1880 (4) at Trinity College second in his class (3). Joseph John Thomson received many awards and honors during his life. He won the Adams Prize in mathematics in 1882 for his essay on vortex ring (4). He also was chosen to be the Master of Trinity College in 1918 (3). In 1906 he won the Nobel Prize in physics for his research of the discharge of electricity in gases (3).

These darklines, some narrow and some wide, are caused by the absorption of specific frequencies within the atmosphere of the earth or sun. Both colorful and informative, this chart makes an excellant teaching aid for any science classroom. This durable chart (seen above) is printed on heavy paper stock and is fitted with metal binding strips at top and bottom. The upper strip includes tabes suitable for wall haning. Chart dimention is 71cm x 28cm. each Chart - Laminated - Spectrum Analysis This chart shows the visible continuous spectrum of the sun and the emission or bright line spectra of ten relatively common elements. It provides an excellant beginning point to show the student the total individuality of the spectrum of each element. It also presents an opportunity to discuss the general relationship between the number of lines and the number of atomic shell electrons.

    CLINTON JOSEPH DAVISSON
Clinton Joseph Davisson was born at Bloomington, Illinois, U.S.A., October 22, 1881, son of Joseph Davisson, an artisan, native of Ohio, descendant of early Dutch and French settlers of Virginia, Union veteran of the American Civil War, and Mary Calvert, a school-teacher, native of Pennsylvania, of English and Scotch parentage.
He attended the Bloomington public schools, and on graduation from High School in 1902 was granted a scholarschip by the University of Chicago for proficiency in mathematics and physics. In September of that year he entered the University of Chicago and came at once under the influence of Professor R. A. Millikan. Unable for financial reasons to continue at Chicago the following year he found employment with a telephone company in his home town. In January 1904 he was appointed assistant in physics at Purdue University on recommendation of Professor Millikan . He returned to Chicago in June 1904 and remained in residence at the University until August 1905. In September 1905, again on the recommendation of Professor Millikan, he was appointed part-time instructor in physics at
