THE CASE OF MORDECHAI VANUNU
By Abdus Salam Carl Sagan Charles Townes Dorothy Hodgkin ... Victor F. Weisskopf
To the Editors Your readers may be interested in the enclosed appeal by twenty-seven scientists on behalf of Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli nuclear technician who, on March 27, was sentenced by a military tribunal to eighteen years in prison for having made public information about Israel's nuclear capacity. Rudolf Peierls Oxford, England
AN APPEAL ON BEHALF OF MORDECHAI VANUNU
The vast arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world is a continuous threat to the survival of life on the planet. Over the years, many people of conscience have sought to arouse world opinion to the grave danger posed to humanity by expanding nuclear weapons systems and their introduction to new arenas of conflict. As early as 1946, Albert Einstein appealed to humanity to place ahead of every consideration the moral imperative of active opposition to the imminent prospect of annihilation presented by the stock piling of nuclear weapons, their delivery systems and the willingness of governments to threaten their use. "Henceforth," wrote Einstein in 1946, "every nation's foreign policy must be judged at every point by one consideration, does it lead to a world of law and order, or does it lead back toward anarchy and death? When humanity holds in its hand the weapon with which it can commit suicide, I believe that to put more power into the gun is to increase the probability of disaster."

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Tinbergen, Jan
(b. April 12, 1903, The Hague, Neth.d. June 9, 1994), Dutch economist noted for his development of econometric models. He was cowinner (with Ragnar Frisch ) of the first Nobel Prize for Economics , in 1969. Tinbergen was the brother of the zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen and was educated at the University of Leiden. From 1929 to 1945 he was a business-cycle statistician with the Dutch government's Central Bureau of Statistics and from 1945 to 1955 was director of the Central Planning Bureau. He held the post of professor of economics at The Netherlands School of Economics (now part of Erasmus University), Rotterdam, for 40 years (1933-73) and then taught for two years at the University of Leiden before his retirement in 1975. Tinbergen was an economic adviser to the League of Nations at Geneva, 1936-38, and it was there that he completed his analysis of the economic development of the United States from 1919 to 1932. This pioneering econometric study provided much of the raw material for his later development of business-cycle theory and for the application of methods of economic stabilization. Later he also constructed an econometric model of The Netherlands, which was applied to both short-term and broader political-economic planning. Among his major works are Statistical Testing of Business Cycles Econometrics Economic Policy (1956), and

What is the Alexander Technique?
O ver time , and for a variety of reasons, we all develop habitual movement patterns. Some of these patterns cause distress, limit mobility, and prevent optimal functioning. T he Alexander Technique teaches a person to recognize and change habits that interfere with well integrated functioning. The student is guided by the teacher's tactile and verbal cues, which are designed to elicit a specific reorganization of the body, primarily focused on the head to spine relationship. The student participates in a new kinesthetic experience, allowing the natural ease of movement to emerge. S tudents notice that as coordination improves, they feel more freedom in everyday and specialized activities. They also experience increased mental clarity and a sense of organized well being. F . M. Alexander taught his technique for more fifty years in England and the United States until his death in 1955 at the age of 86. His work has been acclaimed by many in the field of education, medicine and the arts, such as Aldous Huxley, G. B. Shaw, John Dewey and Nobel Laureates Sir Charles Sherrington and Nikolaas Tinbergen. T he Alexander Technique is an educative process; it helps us restore our psycho-physical integrity by increasing our self-awareness and challenging old, familiar habits. This is a gentle, subtle and gradual rehabilitation process in which the student, through active participation, develops a stronger sense of observation and a deeper awareness of both himself and his environment

Nikolaas Tinb ergen (1907-)
¡V Autobiography
I was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on 15th April 1907, the third of five children of Dirk C. Tinbergen and Jeannette van Eek. We were a happy and harmonious family. My mother was a warm, impulsive person; my father - a grammar school master in Dutch language and history - was devoted to his family, a very hard worker, and an intellectually stimulating man, full of fine, quiet humour and joie de vivre.
I was not much interested in school, and both at secondary school and at University, I only just scraped through, with as little effort as I judged possible without failing. Wise teachers, including my University Professors in Leiden , H. Boschma and the late C. J. van der Klaauw, allowed me plenty of freedom to engage in my hobbies of camping, bird watching, skating and games, of which playing left-wing in grass hockey teams gave me free rein for my almost boundless youthful energies.
Throughout my life, Fortune has smiled on me. Holland's then unparalleled natural riches - its vast sandy shores, its magnificent coastal dunes, the abundant wildlife in its ubiquitous inland waters, all within an hour's walk of our urban home - delighted me, and I was greatly privileged in having access to the numerous stimulating writings of the two quite exceptional Dutch naturalists, E. Heimans and Jac P. Thijsse - still household names in the Netherlands.
As a boy, I had two small aquaria in our backyard, in which I watched, each spring, the nest building and other fascinating behaviours of Sticklebacks. My natural history master at our High School, Dr. A. Schierbeek, put some of us in charge of the three seawater aquaria in the classroom, rightly arguing to the Head Master that I got plenty of fresh air, so that no one needed to worry about my spending the morning break indoors.
