Tinbergen, Nikolaas Ethologiste britannique d'origine néerlandaise (La Haye, 1907 — Oxford, 1988). Il fait ses études à l'université de Leyde, où il devient enseignant en 1936 après avoir consacré sa thèse au comportement des insectes sociaux. Refusant de collaborer avec l'occupant nazi pendant la guerre de 1939-1945, il est emprisonné de 1942 à 1944. Nommé en 1947 à la tête du département de zoologie expérimentale de son université, il y fonde un département de recherche éthologique, mais deux ans plus tard il accepte un poste à Oxford, où il enseignera jusqu'à sa retraite, en 1974. Il fut l'un des premiers, avec l'Autrichien Konrad Lorenz, à étudier systématiquement le comportement animal et à constituer en discipline organisée ce qui n'était auparavant qu'un appendice mineur de la zoologie. Ses travaux lui valurent en 1973 le prix Nobel de médecine et de physiologie (avec K. von Frisch et Lorenz). Parmi ses nombreux ouvrages, on peut citer: l'Etude de l'instinct (1951), resté un classique du genre; la Vie sociale des animaux (1953); l'Univers du goéland argenté (1954).

NIKOLAAS TIMBERGEN (Premio Nobel de medicina 1973) Traducción: Cristina Montserrat En el discurso de aceptación del Premio Nobel, Nikolaas Timbergen dedicó la mitad de su discurso a hablar sobre la Técnica Alexander. La primera parte del éste estuvo dedicado a los problemas del autismo en la primera infancia, la segunda a sus propios descubrimientos sobre la técnica Alexander Este es el fragmento que se refiere a ello. Mi segundo ejemplo de la utilidad de un enfoque etológico en Medicina, tiene una historia completamente diferente. Tiene relación con el trabajo de un hombre extraordinario, el difunto F.M. Alexander (21). Su investigación empezó unos cincuenta años antes del resurgimiento de la Etología, por la cual somos ahora honrados, y sin embargo su manera de proceder era muy similar a los métodos modernos de observación, y creemos que sus logros y los de sus discípulos merecen especial atención. Una vez Alexander se hubo dado cuenta del mal uso de su propio cuerpo, empezó a observar a la gente de su alrededor y descubrió que, como mínimo en el mundo occidental, la mayoría de la gente está de pie, se sienta y se mueve de una manera igualmente defectuosa. Animado por un doctor en Sydney, se convirtió entonces en una especie de misionero. Se dispuso a enseñar -primero a actores, después a una variedad de gente- cómo restituir el buen uso de su musculatura. Gradualmente descubrió que de esta manera podía aliviar una asombrosa variedad de enfermedades somáticas y mentales. También escribió extensamente sobre el tema. Y finalmente enseñó a un grupo de alumnos para que se convirtieran en profesores a su vez, y para que consiguieran los mismos resultados con sus pacientes. Si a él le había costado años encontrar la técnica y aplicarla a su propio cuerpo, un curso con éxito pasó a ser un asunto de meses y es comúnmente aceptado que la formación de un buen profesor Alexander requiere algunos años.
