http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1965/tomonaga-bio.html
Sin-Itiro Tomonaga was born in Tokyo, Japan, on March 31, 1906, the eldest son of Sanjuro Tomonaga and Hide Tomonaga. In 1913 his family moved to Kyoto when his father was appointed a professor of philosophy at Kyoto Imperial University. From that time he was brought up in Kyoto. He is a graduate of the Third Higher School, Kyoto, a renowned senior high school which has educated a number of leading personalities in prewarJapan.
Tomonaga completed work for Rigakushi (bachelor's degree) in physics at Kyoto Imperial University in 1929, with one of his intimate friends. Dr. Hideki Yukawa , Nobel laureate. He was engaged in graduate work for three years at the same university and was then appointed a research associate by Dr. Yoshio Nishina at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Tokyo, where he started to work in a newly developed frontier of theoretical physics quantum electrodynamics - under the guidance of Dr. Nishina. His paper on the photoelectric pair creation is well-known.
Tomonaga stayed in Leipzig, Germany, from 1937 to 1939, to study nuclear physics and the quantum field theory in collaboration with the theoretical group of Dr. W. Heisenberg, where he published a paper "Innere Reibung und Wärmeleitfähigkeit der Kernmaterie", which was chosen as the thesis for Rigakuhakushi (Doctor of Science) at Tokyo Imperial University in December,1939.

    Translated by Takeshi Oka
All atomic particles have a particular "spin," analogous to the rotation of the earth about its axis. Simple as spin may sound, the quantum mechanical reality underlying it is complex and still poorly understood. Yet this mysterious quality and the statistics associated with it have vast practical importance to topics as wide-ranging as the stability of atoms and stars and magnetic resonance imaging. Originally published in 1974, Sin-itiro Tomonaga's The Story of Spin remains the most complete and accessible treatment of the subject, and is now available for the first time in English translation. Tomonaga tells the tale of the pioneers of physics and their difficult journey toward an understanding of the nature of spin and its relationship to statistics. Tomonaga's clear unfolding of the tale of spin will interest advanced scientists studying the foundations of modern physics, while his description of the little-known history of the Japanese physics community from the 1920s to the 1940s will be an invaluable resource for historians and philosophers of science.

Welcome Nobel Schwinger Generations of physicists benefited from the foundation work done by Julian Schwinger Julian S. Schwinger 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics
    Born Feb. 12, 1918; died July 16, 1994
Julian Schwinger was a professor in UCLA's department of physics from 1972 until his death in 1994. "Julian Schwinger will be remembered as one of the great intellectual leaders of UCLA," said Charles E. Young, chancellor during Schwinger's time here. "His contributions to the academic community have made a lasting impression on research, teaching and the role of the university in advancing knowledge."
"Julian was a gentle, cultivated man and one of a handful of scientists whose magnificent contributions made science the great intellectual adventure of the 20th century," said David Saxon, UCLA professor emeritus of physics and former University of California president.
In 1965, Schwinger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, an award he shared with Richard Feynman and Sin-itiro Tomonaga, for their independent contributions to quantum electrodynamics. The theoretical achievements of Schwinger and Feynman in the late 1940s and early 1950s provoked a revolution in theoretical physics (quantum field theory) and laid the foundations for the spectacular progress made in physics since that time.
