Townes, a native South Carolinian and Nobel Laureate in physics. With a concentration in quantum electronics, Townes is internationally known for his invention of the maser/laser. An inductee into the Science Hall of Fame in 1983, Dr. Townes is one of the state's and the nation's singularly distinguished figures of this century. A friend of GSSM, Townes addressed our first Convocation in 1988 and keynoted the Foundation's Celebration 1994 Banquet, personally presenting the Townes Awards. The Townes Award is presented by the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics to honor those persons who go beyond the requirements of their professional positions to assist South Carolina in improving science and mathematics education at all levels. Created by sculptor Dr. J. R. Lischka, the award represents an abstract hand of man embracing a molecule representative of our ambition, outreach and continuing search for knowledge, understanding and application. The award is an original design, with the molecule made of brass and the hand of copper, mounted on a solid walnut base. Each recipient receives a personal sculpture, with a central award kept at the South Carolina Governor's School listing all recipients. There have been 21 APS presidents who have also won a Nobel Prize, before, during, and after their tenure. Thirteen received the prize before serving, seven after serving, and one was awarded the Nobel Prize while serving as APS President. The latter was Arthur Schawlow in 1981. Since the prize is announced in October, and the APS presidential term ends in December, it must have been doubly satisfying to win the Nobel and escape APS servitude at roughly the same time. What an exit! Bill Havens, then APS Executive Secretary, said "He arranged to have the 'President of the APS' send Schawlow a congratulatory letter. John Bardeen won the Nobel Prize, served as APS President, and then won the Nobel Prize again, so obviously we didn't wear him out. Townes Lectures on Black Hole By Dana Levine EXECUTIVE EDITOR Nobel laureate Charles H. Townes gave a lecture last night discussing the research that proved the existence of a black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Townes received the Nobel Prize in 1964 for his work in quantum electronics, which led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. He holds the original patent on laser technology along with his brother-in-law, A. L. Schavlow. Townes served at MIT as Provost and Professor of Physics from 1961-1966, and was named Institute Professor in 1966. In 1967, he left MIT to become a University Professor at the University of California. The center of the galaxy Dust particles block all visible forms of radiation, preventing astronomers from viewing our galaxy. In 1932, Karl G. Jansky built a radio telescope and used it to monitor microwaves coming from outer space. It was soon discovered that these radio waves originated in the center of the galaxy. Work in the late 1960s showed that infrared rays also are emitted from a similar location in space. Evidence points to black hole When an electron and a positron collide, gamma rays are emitted. Through the use of interferometry, researchers managed to find evidence of this type of collision in the center of the galaxy, which is characteristic of a black hole.

Basov dies Basov Born in 1922 in the small town of Usman, in the Lipesk region of Russia, Basov is best known for his work with Profs. A.M. Prokhorov and Charles H. Townes, founding a new branch of science and technology, known as quantum electronics or laser physics. In 1952, Profs. Basov and Prokhorov were the first to demonstrate, on the basis of a theoretical analysis, the feasibility of constructing generators and amplifiers of electromagnetic waves, based on stimulated emission of quantum systems in a state with population inversion. In 1959, Basov and Prokhorov won the Lenin Prize for the discovery of this new principle of generation and amplification of electromagnetic radiation by quantum systems. In 1964, along with Prof. Charles H. Townes, they won the Nobel Prize in physics for fundamental investigations in the field of quantum electronics that have led to the discovery of masers and lasers. Basov's contributions to science in Russia and worldwide are generally recognized. Three Elected to National Academy of Engineering by Jan Ambrosini, Engineering Public Affairs posted Mar. 4, 1998 The new members from the faculty are William C. Webster, professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate dean for research and student affairs in the College of Engineering; Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences; and Nobel Laureate physicist Charles H. Townes, University Professor Emeritus and professor in the graduate school. Their election brings the total Berkeley faculty membership to 76 out of 1,941 nationally and 155 foreign associates. Among academic institutions, Berkeley has one of the highest representations in the academy with more than 7 percent of total members being faculty or alumni. Four Berkeley alumni also were among the 84 new members and seven new foreign associates announced Feb. 13. The new members of the academy will be inducted in ceremonies in October in Washington, D.C. William Webster, who joined the Berkeley faculty in 1969, is an expert on naval architecture and ocean engineering. He received his PhD here in naval architecture in 1966.
