Sports Tuesday, March 11, 2003 SCIENCE Nobel laureates oppose war against Iraq By Belle Dumé Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organized by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: “The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world.” The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

Prize in Physics. Robert B. Laughlin, Horst L. Stoermer, and DanielC. tsui are the cowinners of the 1998 nobel Prize in Physics.
http://www-phys.llnl.gov/Laughlin_Nobel.html
Robert Laughlin awarded 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics
Robert B. Laughlin The work for which the prize was awarded is for the discovery of a new form of "quantum fluid" that represents "yet another breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics." Bob published the seminal theoretical work for this prize in a pair of papers (Phys. Rev. Lett. , 1395 (1983) and Phys. Rev. B , 3383 (1983)) in which he explained a phenomenon discovered by Stoermer and Tsui the year before. At the center of Bob's explanation is "a new state of matter, a quantum fluid the elementary excitations of which...are fractionally charged". It is a state in which the electrons, each carrying an indivisible unit of electric charge, can act together in such a way as to appear like a single particle with a fractional charge. The importance of Bob's work was recognized almost immediately. He received the E. O. Lawrence Award in 1984 from DOE and the Oliver E. Buckley Prize from the American Physical Society in 1986 and now he has received the most prestigious prize in all science.

Nobel Prize Centennial 1901-2001 University of Chicago News: Resources
University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences. Six Laureates are currently members of the faculty: James Heckman (Economic Sciences, 2000), Robert Lucas (Economic Sciences, 1995), Robert Fogel (Economic Sciences, 1993), Gary Becker (Economic Sciences, 1992), Ronald Coase (Economic Sciences, 1991) and James Cronin (Physics, 1980). James Heckman , a Professor in Economics and Public Policy, studies methodologies used to measure the impact of social programs, such as minimum-wage legislation and anti-discrimination law. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on analyzing selective samples. Robert Lucas Robert Fogel , a Professor in the Graduate School of Business, shared the award for applying economics and statistics to the study of history. In his work on slavery in the United States, Fogel has argued that the market would not have ended slavery, as it remained a profitable and efficient system for slave owners.
