Tutu, Desmond Mpilo
Desmond Tutu has formulated his objective as "a democratic and just society without racial divisions", and has set forward the following points as minimum demands: 1. equal civil rights for all 2. the abolition of South Africa's passport laws 3. a common system of education 4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called "homelands" The South African Council of Churches is a contact organization for the churches of South Africa and functions as a national committee for the World Council of Churches. The Boer churches have disassociated themselves from the organization as a result of the unambiguous stand it has made against apartheid. Around 80 percent of its members are black, and they now dominate the leading positions. From Nobel Lectures, Peace 1981-1990.

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu
Country: South Africa. Cause: Ending of apartheid in South African. Background: By 1600 all of what is now South Africa has been settled by indigenous Africans. European intrusion into the region begins in 1652 when the Dutch establish a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope on the southwestern tip of Africa. The British seizure of the settlement in 1795 leads to conflict with the established European farmers (the Boer). The conflict eventually boils over into the Boer War of 1899-1902. The British win but ultimately opt to give South Africa independence. The Union of South Africa is formed on 31 May 1910. Black South Africans have limited voting rights and are subjected to building discrimination. In 1948 the National Party wins the all-white general election on a campaign promise to introduce a system of "apartheid" to totally separate the races. Opposition to the apartheid system by the black majority is ruthlessly suppressed. The National Party will remain in power until 1994. More background Mini biography: Born on 7 October 1931 in Klerksdorp, about 150 km southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. His father is a teacher. The young Tutu is raised in an atmosphere of tolerance and sympathy where, he later says, "I never learnt to hate". When Tutu is 12 his family moves to Johannesburg.

Desmond Tutu Receives Marquette University's Highest Award

The Most Rev. Desmond Mpilo Tutu, Anglican archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa and a 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner known for his work in ending apartheid, received Marquette University's highest award, the Pere Marquette Discovery Award on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Gesu Church. The award has only been given out three times in Marquette history: in 1969 to the crew of Apollo 11, in 1979 to theologian Rev. Karl Rahner, S.J. and in 1981 to Mother Teresa. The award is given in the spirit of the discoveries of Pere Jacques Marquette, renowned Jesuit missionary and explorer, to a person who achieves an extraordinary breakthrough which may be considered a discovery in some form of human knowledge or which adds to the advancement of the human person. "The Archbishop's remarkable work for peace, both in South Africa and in other parts of the world, reflects the spirit of discovery and promotion of human dignity that lie at the heart of Marquette's mission. We are indeed honored and delighted to bestow upon Archbishop Tutu the university's highest honor," said the Rev. Robert Wild, president of Marquette University. Tutu's visit was part of the university's Mission Week celebration and was sponsored by The Manresa Project. He spoke on "Living to make a Difference."

Prejudice Grade Level: Author: Sandi Baker Background: Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born at Klerksdorp, South Africa on October 7, 1931. He was born into a world of great injustice. Klerksdorp is about 120 miles from Johannesburg, the richest city in South Africa. His family, like all other blacks in South Africa had very little money. They lived in a small shack where there was no electricity or sanitation. All black people had to carry passbooks and special identification. This included even his own father, a respected schoolteacher. The white police would sometimes stop black people on the street and demand to see papers. Even at a young age Desmond was upset by this and saw it as very unfair. As a child Tutu saw that not all whites were cruel. One day he met Father Trevor Huddleston, a white priest. This man would have a great influence on Desmond's life. When he was fourteen Desmond caught tuberculosis and almost died. He lay in a hospital bed among dying men for two years. Every day Father Huddleston came to talk to him. This inspired Tutu to a lifelong devotion to Christianity. In 1948 South Africa suffered a terrible disaster. An election was held. White South African citizens were the only ones allowed to vote. They elected the National Party to lead the country. This party was openly racist. They called for apartheid which means literally apart-hood and promised to introduce extreme anti-Black policies. While the rest of the world was making changes after World War II and the Holocaust, the South African white population was going in the opposite direction. The new party wasted no time in enacting new laws that made racial prejudice, segregation, and oppression the central focus of government policy.

The government begins issuing Banning Orders. 1954 Tutu receives his teacher's diploma. 1955 The Bantu Education Act is passed, outlawing math and science instruction to Blacks.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu* In the "old" South Africa, Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu was "a voice of one calling in the desert". Today he is seen as one of the icons of the struggle for social justice and a champion of the reconciliation process that was initiated after South Africa's first democratic elections of 1994. Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born in Klerksdorp in the North West Province in 1931. His father was a school teacher and his mother a domestic worker. The Archbishop completed school at Johannesburg Bantu High School and decided to follow in his father's footsteps. He took a teacher's diploma at the Pretoria Bantu Normal College in 1953 and obtained a BA degree from the University of South Africa the following year. He taught at his alma mater before moving to Munsieville High School in Krugersdorp, where he married his wife, Leah Nomaliso. In 1958 the Archbishop decided to enter the ministry in the Church of the Province of Southern Africa and became an ordinand at St Peter's Theological College in Rosettenville. He received his Licentiate in Theology in 1960 while serving as a deacon in Benoni Location. He was ordained to the priesthood in Johannesburg in 1961, the same year in which South Africa became a republic.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu Today
Tyrants may rule but
Truth, not tyranny, will prevail
Desmond Tutu, full of inspiration, exhorts the Court In 1981, the apartheid government of South Africa summoned Desmond Tutu to appear before their tribunal. Alistair Sparks describes the encounter in his book: The Little Black Bishop stabbed a finger toward the five white commissioners sitting before him and declared: "You whites brought us the Bible; now we blacks are taking it seriously. We are involved with God to set us free fom all that enslaves us and makes us less than what He intended us to be." It was a curious scene, the black bishop all intensity and animation delivering a theological lecture strewn with Biblical quotations to [his five staid, stony faced inquistors]. He sat bouncing and twisting, his hands shaping out the outline of his ideas with vivid gestures, .... his voice [also contributing to] this vituoso performance, sometimes sonorous, playing with the cadences of his African accent, and sometimes breaking into a high-pitched chuckle as he hit on a pertinent new insight. His delivery was somber, joyful, impatient, humourous, reflective, switching rapidly through all the registers in response to a quicksilver spirit. "The God of the Exodus is subversive of all situations of injustice. And the Bible is the most revolutionary, most radical book there is. If any book should be banned by those who rule unjustly and as tyrants, then it is the Bible."
