Sigrid Undset (1882-1949) Den norske forfatter Sigrid Undset blev født den 20. maj 1882 i Kalundborg som datter af den norske arkæolog Ingvald Undset og hans danskfødte kone Anne Charlotte Gyth. Sine to første år tilbragte hun sammen med sin mor hos morfaderen kancelliråd Peter Andreas Gyth i hans hus Gyths Gård I 1884 flyttede familien tilbage til Oslo, men Sigrid Undset tilbringer fremover de fleste sommerferier i Kalundborg hos moderens familie. Hun debuterer som forfatter i 1906 med samtidsromanen Fru Martha Oulie. I de følgende år skriver hun en række samtidsromaner, hvoraf den mest kendte er Jenny fra 1911. I 1912 gifter hun sig med den norske kunstmaler Anders Svarstad. De får tre børn, sønnerne Anders og Hans Benedict, samt datteren Maren Charlotte. Yet since her death in 1949 Americans have heard little about Sigrid Undset. Tim Page wants to change that. Page, the biographer of another long-neglected novelist, Dawn Powell, was led to Undset by a list of Powell's favorite books, on which Undset's Jenny (1911) was, he writes, the only title that ''drew a complete blank.'' She is best known for her historical novel "Kristin Lavransdatter". For this Middle Age trilogy she received the 1928 Nobel Prize in literature. She gave the money from this prize to help families with disabled children. Among many other famous books are "Jenny", "The Master of Hestviken", "The Faithful Wife" and "Madame Dorthea". Many of her novels deal with problems about regret and guilt. She converted to Roman Catholicism although she was first generation of emancipated women. Undset early stood up against the Nazism because of its contempt for weakness and had to live in USA during the German occupation of Norway.

Sigrid lärde sig mycket historia av sin pappa som var arkeolog. Pappan dog sedan och Sigrid började studera på Handelsgymnasium. Redan som 16 åring började hon jobba på kontor i Oslo och det var då hon började skriva. Hon gav då två böcker var av en lite kändare som hette ”Fru Marta Oulie”. 1909 slutade hon med jobbet på kontoret och två år senare gav hon ut boken ”Jenny” som blev hennes stora genombrott. Under denna tid mådde hon väldigt dåligt och levde i stort sett bara på kaffe och cigaretter. Detta gjorde att Sigrid mådde dåligt och sökte stipendium så hon skulle kunna komma ut i världen och slappna av. Hon fick stipendiet och flyttade till Rom. Hon gifte sig då med en konstnär vid namn Svarstad. Strax efter hennes stora bok ”Kristin Lavransdotter” så skiljer hon sig från Svarstad och blir sedan katolik. Boken ”Olav Audunssön” kom ut någon gång mellan 1925-27 och gav henne Nobelpriset i litteratur 1928.
