[Paperback] Penguin (1997)
A magnificent new translation of the first volume of a landmark historical saga by a Nobel Prize-winning novelist. Originally published in Norway in 1920, "The Wreath" is set in the 14th century and tells the story of the courtship of a strong-willed and passionate young woman and a dangerously charming and impetuous man. Undset's lyrical prose combines the sounds and style of Nordic ballads, European courtly poetry, and religious literature. Kristin Lavransdatter: Vol.2 - The Wife

Part two is the story of Kristin's fifteen years of troubled married life on the great estate of Husaby. Kristin Lavransdatter: Vol 3 - The Cross

[Paperback] Penguin (2000)
Kristin Lavransdatter is a story of love, loyalty, and betrayal, set against a richly detailed historical backdrop of fourteenth-century Norway. The Cross (1922) finds Kristin returning with her husband, Erlend, and their sons to her childhood home, Jorundgaard. As the boys grow older, Kristin is increasingly worried about their prospects, and she and Erlend become estranged. The most devastating and emotional volume in the trilogy, The Cross chronicles the trials and losses Kristin must bear. Tiina Nunnally's exquisite rendering of this unforgettable novel, both more faithful to the beauty of the original Norwegian and more readable than the existing translation, is the first new English translation of Undset's masterpiece.

Sigrid Undset's Time Warp Author: Kathryn Hagen Title: Sigrid Undset's Time Warp Larger Work: Catholic Heritage Pages: Our Sunday Visitor, Inc., September/October 1997 Description: A sketch of Sigrid Undset's life. She was a 20th-century Nobel Laureate, a convert and the author of Kristin Lavransdatter. Sigrid Undset's Time Warp By Kathryn Hagen Visitors to Sigrid Undset's home in Lillehammer, Norway, said it was like stepping into another century. Her restored house dated back to the end of the first millennium, and room after room was filled with antiques. The hostess herself dressed as a 14th-century matron. Undset was nothing if not gung ho when it came to her preferences, whether it was her love of Scandinavian medieval history or of the Catholic Church. One she discovered as a child, the other she turned to as an adult. Both passions fill the writings for which she received the 1928 Nobel Prize in Literature. "The truth is that we believed in nothing," Undset confessed about her early years. Yet by the end of her life, her faith had sustained her through the deaths of two of her children and the seizure of her home during the German invasion of Norway in 1940.

Undset, Sigrid My father's family came fromOsterdalen. The first ancestor of ours of whom anything at all was known was one Peder Halvorsen who, in 1730, lived in Grytdalen in the Sollien valley of the river Atna where some men from Osterdalen had been allowed to settle and farm the land. My father's folk remained there until my grandfather, Halvor Halvorsen, came to Trondhjem as a non-commissioned officer and became warden of a workhouse. He took the name of Undset from a hamlet in which my grandmother had lived when she became a widow.
My mother had no choice but to send me to a commercial school in Christiania. I did not like it there but it had one great advantage over my old school; no one there expected me to like anything! Later on, I went to work in an office and learned among other lessons to do things I did not care for, and to do them well. I remained there for ten years - from the age of 17 until I was 27. Before I left this office, two of my books had already been published - Fru Marte Oulie in 1907, and Den lykkelige alder (The Happy Age) in 1908. After leaving the office job, I went to Germany and Italy on a scholarship. I have published a number of books since, my last two novels being set in the Middle Ages. They are Kristin Lavransdatter, which appeared in three volumes (192O-1922): Kransen (The Garland), Husfrue (The Mistress of Husaby), Korset (The Cross); and Olav Audunsson i Hestviken (1925 ) [The Master of Hestviken] and its sequel Olav Audunssen og hans born (1927) [Olav Audunsson and his Children].
