HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOON BRIEFING BY MANOEL DE ALMEIDA E SILVA DEPUTY SPOKESMAN FOR THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS UN HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK
Wednesday , December 12, 2001
ANNAN MEETS WITH SWEDISH PRIME MINISTER, PARLIAMENT Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Stockholm, Sweden, this morning, where he met at the Nobel Foundation with his fellow Nobel Laureates who received awards this year. While the Peace Prize is given in Oslo, Norway, the other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm. At mid-day he went to the Parliament, where he was greeted by Speaker Brigitta Dahl. He addressed a session of the Parliament, speaking primarily about Afghanistan and the Middle East, and then taking questions from Parliament members. He told the Parliamentarians that talks between the Palestinians and Israelis should not wait for any period of calm, because it is when people are dying that peace talks are needed most. In response to a question on the fight against poverty, he stressed the importance of the conferences to be held next year on financing for development in Monterrey, Mexico, and on sustainable development in Johannesburg, South Africa.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOON BRIEFING BY FRED ECKHARD SPOKESMAN FOR THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS UN HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK
Friday, October 11, 2002
ANNAN CALLS FOR GLOBAL CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY Secretary-General Kofi Annan this morning addressed the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he had once studied, and he used the occasion to make a strong pitch for global corporate responsibility. He said, In an age of interdependence, global citizenship is a crucial pillar of progress. One of the most welcome developments at the United Nations in recent years, he added, has been the steadily growing engagement of the business community. He noted the advances of the Global Compact he launched in 1999, a voluntary initiative which, he said, has been a platform for showing how markets can be made to serve societys needs. He returned back to his office early this afternoon.

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University is a non-governmental organization in general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in consultative status with The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) and affiliated to the Department of Public Information (DPI).
As the founding fathers of the United Nations formulated a blueprint for a world of peace, security and justice; the founding members of the Brahma Kumaris were researching universal core values which they considered as necessary to restore individual human worth and dignity. In 1980, the relationship between the United Nations and the Brahma Kumaris was formalized.
The overarching global spiritual perspective of the Brahma Kumaris helps to highlight and to strengthen the ideals and motivating principles underlying the work and spirit of the United Nations. Speaking with the authority of an increasingly large segment of civil society concerned with human and social values, the University's work supports UN programmes on a wide range of developmental, humanitarian and other issues. Its special competence allows it to bring a particularly ethical and spiritual approach to world concerns and for these to be expressed clearly within the broad forum of UN circles.
These are some of the international projects sponsored by the Brahma Kumaris:

Press Briefing
DAILY PRESS BRIEFING BY SPOKESMAN FOR SECRETARY-GENERAL
The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today's noon briefing by Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, and Shirley Brownell, Spokeswoman for the President of the General Assembly. Briefing by Spokesman for Secretary-General Good afternoon. For those of you who were around last night you know that we confirmed that the United States made a payment of $51.2 million to the regular budget yesterday. And that amount puts them in excess of what was needed for them to maintain their vote in the General Assembly. And in that connection, we've asked Joseph Connor, the Under-Secretary-General for Management, to brief you on the current financial situation of the Organization at the end of this year. And we'll get to you in just a minute, Joe. [Mr. Connor's press briefing will be issued separately.] **Security Council: Briefings on Democratic Republic of Congo and East Timor In the last meeting for this week, the Security Council held consultations this morning, and heard a briefing by Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hedi Annabi on the subject of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That follows on a briefing yesterday on the deteriorating military and security situation, particularly in the eastern part of that country. Council members agreed on a press statement, which was read out by the President.
