Johannes Diderik van der Waals was born on November 23, 1837 in Leyden, The Netherlands, the son of Jacobus van der Waals and Elisabeth van den Burg. After having finished elementary education at his birthplace he became a schoolteacher. Although he had no knowledge of classical languages, and thus was not allowed to take academic examinations, he continued studying at Leyden University in his spare time during 1862-65. In this way he also obtained teaching certificates in mathematics and physics.
In 1864 he was appointed teacher at a secondary school at Deventer; in 1866 he moved to The Hague, first as teacher and later as Director of one of the secondary schools in that town.
New legislation whereby university students in science were exempted from the conditions concerning prior classical education enabled Van der Waals to sit for university examinations. In 1873 he obtained his doctor's degree for a thesis entitled Proceedings of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and in the , and they were also translated into other languages.

VAN DER WAALS, JOHANNES DIDERIK (1837 - 1923). Over de Continuiteit van den Gas- en Vloeistoftoestand. Leiden, 1873. In 1873, van der Waals obtained his doctor's degree for a thesis entitled Over de Continuiteit van den Gas- en Vloeistoftoestand on the continuity of the gas and liquid state ), which put him at once in the foremost rank of physicists. In this thesis, he put forward an "Equation of State" embracing both the gaseous and liquid state; he could demonstrate that these two states of aggregation not only merge into each other in a continuous manner, but that they are in fact of the same nature. This equation of state was a dramatic improvement over the ideal gas law. It was van der Waals' genius that made him see the necessity of taking into account the volumes of molecules and the intermolecular forces ("van der Waals forces", as they are now generally called) in establishing the relationship between the pressure, volume, and temperature of gases and liquids. This copy of Over de Continuiteit is open to the chapter where van der Waal's equation of state, ( P + a/V2 )( V - b ) = RT, is first derived. Van der Waals won the Nobel Prize for this work in 1910.

When, in 1876, the new Law on Higher Education was established which promoted the old Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam to university status, Van der Waals was appointed the first Professor of Physics. Together with Van't Hoff and Hugo de Vries, the geneticist, he contributed to the fame of the University, and remained faithful to it until his retirement, in spite of enticing invitations from elsewhere.
The immediate cause of Van der Waals' interest in the subject of his thesis was R. Clausius' treatise considering heat as a phenomenon of motion, which led him to look for an explanation for T. Andrews' experiments (1869) revealing the existence of "critical temperatures " in gases. It was Van der Waals' genius that made him see the necessity of taking into account the volumes of molecules and the intermolecular forces ("Van der Waals forces", as they are now generally called) in establishing the relationship between the pressure, volume and temperature of gases and liquids.

Van der Waals was led to the hypothesis of the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states of matter by combining the kinetic theory of gases with Laplace's theory of capillarity. In his theory of corresponding states (1880) he presented an equation of state (now named for him) for homogeneous substances in terms of pressure, volume, and temperature (see gas laws ); unlike the ideal gas law, his equation contains constant factors (different for each real substance) to account for the fact that molecules are of finite size and experience weak forces of mutual attraction (now called van der Waals forces). For that work and for discovering the law of binary mixtures he received the 1910 Nobel Prize in Physics. He was professor (1877-1907) at the Univ. of Amsterdam.

    Most divers are taught Boyle's law and the universal gas equation which assures us that all gases are "ideal" and their molecules behave like soft rubber balls when they are compressed. The universal gas equation tells us that if a cylinder is filled with a gas to twice its original pressure it contains twice as much of that gas so if a 20 litre twinset is filled with air to 200 bar it contains 200 x 20 = 4,000 litres of useable air and at 300 bar it would contain 6,000 litres so we can easily calculate gas consumption and mixed gas fills.
    Unfortunately along comes Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) in spoil-sport mode and says "well not really". Professor Van der Waals received the Nobel prize for physics in 1910 for his work on the equation of state for gases. He showed that real gases do not behave like the supposed ideal gases of Boyle's law. An ideal gas would be composed of infinitely small molecules that did not attract one another but real gases have real sized molecules taking up space and they tend to attract one another in proportion to their weight. This second effect is like gravity and is dominant at pressures used to fill diving cylinders. Thus a quantity of the dimer Oxygen, O2 with a molecular weight of 32, does not generate as much pressure as the same amount of Helium, a monatomic molecule with a molecular weight of 4. As the pressure increases, however, the size of the gas's molecules has the opposite effect allowing less and less gas to be added for an equivalent increase in pressure. The law of diminishing returns!

    Johannes Diderik van der Waals was born in Leyden in 1873 and died in 1923. He is the Dutch physicist that was interested greatly in thermodynamics. He is responsible for coming up with the equation that is called the van der waals equation. It is an equation that deals with the corresponding states on the continuity of the liquid and gaseous state of matter. In 1901 he received the Nobel Prize of physic for the discoveries he had made in this area. He then went on to discover what today is named the van der Waals forces, which deal with the attractive forces holding the atoms of molecules together. His donation to the world of physics has been great and his name is one that is well known for good reason. After van der waals had completed his elementary education in the Netherlands he became a school teacher. He studied at Leyden University although he was not allowed to be tested because he did not have knowledge of the classical languages. He had several other teaching jobs and soon there was a new legislation that allowed students without prior classical education to take university examinations, and he received his doctor’s degree in 1873 (biography).

Rowlands Date: March 23, 2000 Johannes Diderik van der Waals November 23, 1837 saw the birth of one of the greatest men in physics. Johannes Diderik van der Waals was born in Leyden, The Netherlands. He began teaching elementary school in 1856. He then attended Leyden University, focusing his studies on mathematics, physics and astronomy. In 1866 Van der Waals taught at a secondary school in The Hague. He then moved from teaching mathematics and physics to being the Director of the school. In 1873 he was finally able to receive his doctorate degree due to a new law. Previously there had been a law that required knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages for graduation. The thesis he wrote was (On the continuity of the gas and liquid state). His influences for choosing this topic were the works of T. Andrews and Rudolf Clausius, who worked on critical temperatures and heat resulting from motion, respectively. An "Equation of State" was presented in this thesis, which was in terms of temperature, pressure, and volume, and was a great improvement to the ideal gas law. Included in the equation were two constants, which varied from substance to substance. These constants account for the fact that there are weak forces between molecules. Because of his work on this topic, these forces became known as Van der Waals forces. Amsterdam’s University "Illustre" became Van der Waals’ workplace for the next 31 years. He was the universities only first and only physics professor for 14 years, when three others joined the physics department’s teaching staff. During the time when he was teaching, he was also still conducting his own work. He developed the Law of corresponding States in 1880, which showed that if pressure, temperature, and volume were expressed as functions of their critical counterparts, then an equation can be used that is valid for all substances. Other areas of work by Van der Waals were the "Theory of Binary Solutions" and his theory of capillarity. Both are considered great contributions to the scientific world.
