JOHANNES DIDERIK VAN DER WAALS 1837-1923 Amsterdam University
1910 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the equation of state for gases and liquids. This tends to indicate that he knew his stuff.
OK. The simple rules for gases about pressure, volume and temperature that you learnt in Scuba for beginners are only an approximation. Good enough for some poor lad or lass who has to worry about doing a mask clear without a total sinus washout but now you're grown up and want to breath fancy stuff it just won't do anymore. You haven't forgotten but we'll recap anyway.
Do you remember PV=kT
The ideal gas law? Oh yes. The one that summarised all the others ones that we can't remember the names of. Well let us get rid of that nasty k for an arbitrary constant and turn it into the real one PV=nRT that scientists use. This is much better because we can calculate things with it rather than just do ratios. Let's name the parts in useful units:
P Pressure in bar V Volume in Litres n Quantity of gas in mols R The universal gas constant 0.0831451 if we want to do bar and litres

Presentation Speech by the Rector General of National Antiquities, Professor 0. Montelius, President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Your Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Academy of Sciences has resolved to award this year's Nobel Prize for Physics to the world-famous Dutch physicist, Johannes Diderik van der Waals for his studies of the physical state of liquids and gases.
The force preventing the separation of the molecules in a liquid is their mutual attraction, owing to which a high pressure prevails in the interior of the liquid. Van der Waals calculated this pressure, the existence of which had already been vaguely perceived by Laplace, for water. It amounts to not less than about 10,000 atmospheres at normal temperature. In other words the internal pressure, as it is called, of a drop of water would be about ten times greater than the water pressure at the greatest depth of the sea known to us.
However, this was not the most important result of Van der Waals' studies. His calculations led him to consider that once we are acquainted with the behaviour of a single type of gas and the corresponding liquid, e.g. that of carbon dioxide, at all temperatures and pressures, we are able by simple proportioning to calculate for any gas or liquid its state at any temperature and pressure, provided that we know it at only one, i.e. the critical, temperature.

Van der Waals was led to the hypothesis of the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states of matter by combining the kinetic theory of gases with Laplace's theory of capillarity. In his theory of corresponding states (1880) he presented an equation of state (now named for him) for homogeneous substances in terms of pressure, volume, and temperature (see gas laws

One hundred and twenty-five years of theoretical physics in Amsterdam
A.J. Kox
Symposium Vijftig jaar Instituut voor Theoretische Fysica UvA, 10 December 1999 Van der Waals was not an easy person to deal with: he kept his distance from most others and inspired in his students a mixture of awe and admiration. He could be very firm with them, even harsh, as we know from recollections of several of his students. When we look at the accomplishments of Amsterdam physics in general, it soon becomes clear that during the first decades Van der Waals dominated the scene with his theoretical work. In retrospect four main achievements can be distinguished: the equation of state (which, strictly speaking, was derived before the Amsterdam days, but it was further worked out in Amsterdam), the law of corresponding states (1880), the theory of binary mixtures (1891) and finally the theory of capillary phenomena (1893). All of these theories made a lasting impact on theoretical physics. Let me elaborate a bit on the theory of binary mixtures: one of the unexpected predictions of this theory is that under certain circumstances a mixture of two components will demix, that is, that it will separate into its two components. This and other predictions were subject of experimental research as recent as 25 years ago and it turned out that Van der Waals had made the right predictions.

Van der Waals acknowledged inspiration from an 1857 paper by Clausius on the kind of motion we call heat. A gas is pictured as consisting of a myriad of material points bouncing about at great speed. Van der Waals' idea of continuity was that there is no essential difference between gaseous and liquid states of matter. best viewed in 800x600
