In oktober 2001 worden de winnaars van de Nobelprijzen weer bekend gemaakt. De bekendmaking in oktober en de uitreiking in december hebben dit jaar een bijzonder karakter, omdat de Nobelprijs honderd jaar bestaat. Meer dan 700 laureaten hebben voor hun wetenschappelijke of literaire werk of voor hun inspanningen ten behoeve van de wereldvrede de Nobelprijs ontvangen.
Het testament van Alfred Nobel
Toen Alfred Bernard Nobel in 1896 op 63-jarige leeftijd overleed, liet hij een vermogen na; omgerekend naar de huidige koers 500 miljoen gulden. In zijn testament, vier handbeschreven velletjes papier, bepaalde Nobel dat dit geld ten goede moest komen van een stichting. Deze kreeg de opdracht met de rente van dit bedrag een prijs in te stellen voor 'die personen die zich verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt voor de mensheid.' Nobel bepaalde vijf gebieden waarin personen zich konden onderscheiden: natuurkunde, scheikunde, geneeskunde, literatuur en de vrede.
Het testament werd bestreden door de erfgenamen, maar een groep vrienden van Nobel spande zich in om zijn wens uit te voeren. Vijf jaar na de dood van Nobel vond in 1901 de eerste uitreiking van Nobelprijzen plaats. Sindsdien gebeurt dit jaarlijks, en wel op 10 december, de sterfdag van Alfred Nobel.

Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) was a Dutch physicist. In important ways his life was similar to that of J. H. van't Hoff, who was 15 years his junior. Van der Waals, the son of a carpenter, got a slower start than van't Hoff, the son of a doctor. He began as a primary school teacher and, lacking a classical education, could only graduate with an advanced degree after the law was changed to drop the requirements in Latin and Greek for science students. Remember that it was when van't Hoff , while writing his doctoral thesis in Utrecht, published the little pamphlet Voorstel tot Uitbreiding der Tegenwoordige in de Scheikunde gebruikte Structuurformules in de Ruimte (Proposal for the Extension of Current Chemical Stuctures into Space) . Once expanded and translated into French and German , this pamphlet revolutionized organic chemistry. In the previous year van der Waals's doctoral thesis in Leiden On the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states proposed an empirical correction to the Equation of State for Ideal Gases (PV = nRT), to make it work for real gases at high pressure and low temperature, where attraction between molecules and their finite size (repulsive forces) come into play. Despite the Dutch language, the thesis was an instant success, prompting James Clerk Maxwell to write

Blodgett, Katharine (Burr)
An industrial physicist and physical chemist who is known for her work in surface chemistry. She is especially known for her work in monomolecular and multilayer films (termed "Blodgett films") and her invention of non-reflecting ("invisible") glass, which is used in optical instruments.
Brown, Robert
Although primarily a botanist, Brown is known to colloid science for his 1827 discovery that dispersed particles in water move about randomly, even when the water itself appears motionless. The phenomenon, explained later by others, is due to bombardments of the particles by water molecules and is known as Brownian motion.
Coulter, Wallace
An electrical engineer best known as the discoverer of the Coulter principle, a sensing-zone method for automatically counting and sizing microscopic particles suspended in a liquid. He developed this into the "Coulter Counter" which was first applied to the complete blood count diagnostic test, and later applied to other colloids in a variety of other industries.

Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, and willed his fortune to set up a foundation to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 and the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. The recipients are commonly referred to as the Nobel Laureates. On the occasion of its 300th anniversary in 1968, the Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) made a large donation to the Nobel Foundation to establish a prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel.
