Harold E. Varmus, M.D.
Director, National Institutes of Health
Harold E. Varmus, M.D., was sworn in as director of the National Institutes of Health on Nov. 23, 1993. His nomination by President Clinton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate Nov. 19, 1993.
Before assuming his position at NIH, Dr. Varmus was a professor of microbiology, biochemistry, and Cancer Society professor of molecular virology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is an internationally recognized authority on retroviruses and the genetic basis of cancer.
Dr. Varmus and his UCSF colleague J. Micheal Bishop, M.D., shared a Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1989 for demonstrating that cancer genes (oncogenes) can arise from normal cellular genes, called proto-oncogenes.
In recent years, his work has assumed special relevance to AIDS, through a focus on biochemical properties of HIV, and to breast cancer, through investigation of mammary tumors in mice. His research activities have been supported by grants from the NIH; by his professorship from the American Cancer Society; and by the Melanie Bronfman Award for Breast Cancer.
Dr. Varmus has served as chairman of the Board of Biology for the National Research Council, an advisor to the Congressional Caucus for Biomedical Research, a member of the Joint Steering Committee for Public Policy of Biomedical Societies, and co-chairman of the New Delegation for Biomedical Research, a coalition of leaders in the biomedical community. He directed "Winding Your Way Through DNA," a popular public symposium on recombinant DNA staged by UCSF.

Ho, Varmus Address Serious Issues at Commencements
By Eugene Russo Commencement ceremonies this spring at many colleges and universities across the country honored not only graduating students, but scientists hailing from a variety of fields. In recognition of their achievements, dozens of scientists received honorary degrees; some also offered words of advice to graduates. The speeches included the usual all-important cliches: Strive to be your best. Take risks. Seize opportunities. Retain your individuality. Learn for the sake of learning. However, several scientists also used the opportunity to voice their concerns on the current state of pressing issues such as AIDS research and public health.
David Ho Speakers included well-known AIDS researcher David D. Ho , the director and chief executive officer of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Rockefeller University in New York. Ho spoke at the commencement ceremonies of both Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston and Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. Named Time Magazine's man of the year in 1996, Ho was the first to overturn the conventional assumption that the HIV virus remains dormant for up to ten years before causing AIDSa discovery that led to his novel treatment of the virus with a combination of drugs.

Published on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 by the New York Times 41 Nobel Laureates Sign Against a War Without International Support by William J. Broad Forty-one American Nobel laureates in science and economics issued a declaration yesterday opposing a preventive war against Iraq without wide international support. The statement, four sentences long, argues that an American attack would ultimately hurt the security and standing of the United States, even if it succeeds. The signers, all men, include a number who at one time or another have advised the federal government or played important roles in national security. Among them are Hans A. Bethe, an architect of the atom bomb; Walter Kohn, a former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon; Norman F. Ramsey, a Manhattan Project scientist who readied the Hiroshima bomb and later advised NATO; and Charles H. Townes, former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon and chairman of a federal panel that studied how to base the MX missile and its nuclear warheads. In addition to winning Nobel prizes, 18 of the signers have received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor.
