Vincent du Vigneaud was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 18th May, 1901, the son of the late inventor and machine designer Alfred J. du Vigneaud and his wife, Mary Theresa. He studied under Professor C.S. Marvel at Illinois University and took his B.Sc. degree in 1923 and M.Sc. in 1924. During the year 1924-1925 he was assistant biochemist to Dr. W.G. Farr at the Philadelphia General Hospital and served on the Staff of the Graduate School of Medicine of Pennsylvania University . In 1927 he worked with Professor J.R. Murlin and submitted a thesis to the School of Medicine of Rochester University which earned him the Ph.D. As a Fellow of the National Research Council he worked with Professor J.J. Abel at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, with Professor George Barger at Edinburgh University Medical School and with Professor Charles R. Harington at London University College Hospital. On his return to America, du Vigneaud joined the Physiological Chemical Staff at Illinois University under Professor W.C. Rose and in 1932 he became Head of the Biochemistry Department at the George Washington University School of Medicine. The Cornell University Medical College offered him a Professorship as Head of the Biochemistry Department in 1938.

Dec. 11, 1978, White Plains, N.Y.), American biochemist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1955 for the isolation and synthesis of two pituitary hormones: vasopressin, which acts on the muscles of the blood vessels to cause elevation of blood pressure; and oxytocin , the principal agent causing contraction of the uterus and secretion of milk. Du Vigneaud studied at the University of Illinois, Urbana, took his doctorate from the University of Rochester, N.Y. (1927), then studied at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, Berlin, and the University of Edinburgh. He headed the biochemistry department of the George Washington University Medical School, Washington, D.C. (1932-38), and was professor and head of the department of biochemistry at the Cornell University Medical College, New York City (1938-67), and professor of chemistry at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. (1967-75). Du Vigneaud and his staff helped identify the chemical structure of the hormone insulin in the late 1930s, and in the early 1940s they established the structure of the sulfur-bearing vitamin biotin. Later that decade, they isolated vasopressin and oxytocin and analyzed both those hormones' chemical structure. Du Vigneaud found that the oxytocin molecule contains only eight different amino acids, in contrast to the hundreds of amino acids most other proteins contain. In 1953 he was able to synthesize oxytocin, becoming the first to achieve the synthesis of a protein hormone. In 1946 du Vigneaud and his colleagues at Cornell achieved another breakthrough, the synthesis of penicillin.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Vincent Du Vigneaud The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1955 Vincent du Vigneaud was born in Chicago, Illinois , on 18th May, 1901, the son of the late inventor and machine designer Alfred J. du Vigneaud and his wife, Mary Theresa . He studied under Professor C. S. Marvel at Illinois University and took his B. Sc. degree in 1923 and M. Sc. in 1924. His researches have centered mainly about sulfur-containing compounds of biochemical importance, being concerned originally with the sulfur of insulin and more recently with two hormones of the posterior pituitary gland-oxytocin and vasopressin. He has also studied intermediary metabolism, amino acids and peptides, transmethylation and metabolism of one carbon compounds, transsulfuration, biotin and penicillin. Du Vigneaud married Zella Zon Ford in 1924; they have a son, Vincent, Jr. (b. 1933) and a daughter, Marilyn Renee (b. 1935). Vincent du Vigneaud died in 1978.
