Walesa, Lech Solidarity . A moderate, he gained numerous concessions from the authorities before his arrest and internment in the military crackdown of 1981. He was released in Nov., 1982, and in 1983 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1987, he helped block Jaruzelski's reform initiatives by organizing a boycott of a government referendum, and in 1988 he led a series of nationwide strikes. In 1989 he negotiated an agreement with the government under which Solidarity was legalized and allowed to campaign as a political party in the upcoming elections. By the end of Aug., 1989, a Solidarity-led coalition government was in power, but Walesa became increasingly critical of Premier Tadeusz Mazowiecki. In Dec., 1990, Walesa was elected president of Poland, defeating Mazowiecki, and resigned his Solidarity post. Walesa failed to win reelection in 1995, losing to Aleksander Kwasniewski , a former Communist who was the Democratic Left Alliance candidate.

    About Lech Walesa

Walesa, an electrician who had long been active in the underground labor movement, revitalized the workers at the barricaded shipyard just as they were on the verge of abandoning their strike, which eventually spread to factories across the nation. Walesa entered into negotiations with the government, convincing it to grant legal recognition to Solidarity and the right to form independent unions and to strike to workers. This became the Gdansk Agreement, which Walesa signed on August 31.
Walesa was released that same fall and, under his leadership, Solidarity continued to exist as an underground organization. Celebrated worldwide as a symbol of the hope for freedom, Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. For the next five years, the country became marked more and more by chaos and labor unrest. Acknowledging that it could no longer control the country, the government re-legalized Solidarity and invited it to join the Communist Party in forming a coalition government. In the resulting election, Solidarity won almost every contest.

Walesa, Lech Lech Walesa was born on September 29, 1943 in Popowo, Poland. After graduating from vocational school, he worked as a car mechanic at a machine center from 1961 to 1965. He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Gdansk shipyards as an electrician. In 1969 he married Danuta Golos and they have eight children. During the clash in December 1970 between the workers and the government, he was one of the leaders of the shipyard workers and was briefly detained. In 1976, however, as a result of his activities as a shop steward, he was fired and had to earn his living by taking temporary jobs.
In 1978 with other activists he began to organise free non-communist trade unions and took part in many actions on the sea coast. He was kept under surveillance by the state security service and frequently detained. In August 1980 he led the Gdansk shipyard strike which gave rise to a wave of strikes over much of the country with Walesa seen as the leader. The primary demands were for workers' rights. The authorities were forced to capitulate and to negotiate with Walesa the Gdansk Agreement of August 31, 1980, which gave the workers the right to strike and to organise their own independent union.

Solidarity's Lech Walesa speaks at MSU tonight
Lech Walesa, the former Polish shipyard electrician who inspired the "Solidarity" social revolution that helped overthrow communism in Eastern Europe and won the Nobel Peace Prize in the process, will speak at 7:30 p.m. tonight in MSU's Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The event is free and open to the public as a service of the MSU Leadership Institute. His speech will be "Democracy: The Never Ending Battle." The first democratically-elected president of Poland, Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for his courageous and successful attempt for freedom. Walesa had been a dissenter from government policy for many years before the infamous Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland in 1980, a violent strike by workers protesting an increase in the price of food set by Poland's Communist government. The strike showed signs of failing when Walesa scaled the shipyard walls and delivered an inspiring speech from atop a bulldozer. Walesa's passion inspired the linking of workers in factories across the country, ultimately leading to the formation of Solidarity, the union that became a social revolution. Walesa's efforts led to his selection as Man of the Year by Time magazine and newspapers throughout the world.

—No.

Lech Walesa Lech Walesa winner of the Peace Nobel Prize The Struggle and the Triumph: An Autobiography by Lech Walesa, with contributions by Arkadiusz Rybicki, edited by Franklin Phillip. Paperback. Reprint. Arcade Pub: January 1994. Perhaps there are as many versions of history as there are people in the world. Lech Walesa's autobiography definitely gives a very important perspective on recent history of Poland. Born in a family of modest means in a provincial location of Poland, he moved to the seaport city of Gdansk, where he got a job as an electrician at a shipyard. Poland was then ruled by a totalitarian government subservient to the Soviet Union. Walesa got involved in a nascent pro-democracy movement to become its celebrated leader in 1980. He was elected the president of Solidarnosc , a newly founded free trade union of 10 million members. He was also a charismatic leader of a broader non-violent movement for democracy and independence referred to by the same name. The Communists defended their power by martial law, but they were faced with sustained peaceful resistance while their Moscow allies were loosing strength. Against all odds, despite imprisonment of thousands of activists, government-sponsored killing of more than a hundred people and thousands of other acts of governmental persecution, the Poles overcame Communism and made Walesa their first post-Second World War democratically elected president. As it happens in democracies, Walesa was voted out of office at the end of his first term, but Poland is an independent republic today and the story of the Polish blue-collar-worker-turned-president will forever be one of the most important parts of 20th century European history. He will speak at School Meeting about his life as a politician in Communist Eastern Europe and the value of a life in politics.. Walesa was an employee of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. In the summer of 1980 he led disaffected workers to strike against an increase in prices by the country's communist regime. The workers demamded that they be able to form trade unions. Walesa helped form Solidarity, a union and political action group with 10 million members. Walesa had been active in the underground labor movement in Poland for many years.Walesa's fiery speeches at the strike and mass support helped to convince the government to allow for the formation of independent unions and recognition of the Solidarity movement. The result was the Gdansk Agreement. Walesa was awarded man of the year by Time Magazine, The Financial Times, The London Observer, Die Welt, and Le Soir. This indicated that he had effect on the world poitical system. Walesa's party's relationswith the Polish government grew poor in 1981 and on December 31 of that year martial law was declared and thousands of Solidarity members, incuding Walesa, were arrested. For his courageous effort,to improve the social, political and economic life of his fellow Poles via nonviolent means Walesa was awarded the Nobe Peace Prize in 1983.
