OTTO HEINRICH WARBURG
Otto Heinrich Warburg was born on October 8, 1883, in Freiburg, Baden. His father, the physicist Emil Warburg, was President of the Physikalische Reichsanstalt, Wirklicher Geheimer Oberregierungsrat. Otto studied chemistry under the great Emil Fischer, and gained the degree, Doctor of Chemistry (Berlin), in 1906. He then studied under von Krehl and obtained the degree, Doctor of Medicine (Heidelberg), in 1911. He served in the Prussian Horse Guards during World War I. In 1918 he was appointed Professor at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology, Berlin-Dahlem. Since 1931 he is Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Cell Physiology, there, a donation of the Rockefeller Foundation to the Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft, founded the previous year.
In addition to many publications of a minor nature, Warburg is the author of Stoffwechsel der Tumoren (1926), Katalytische Wirkungen der lebendigen Substanz (1928), Schwermetalle als Wirkungsgruppen von Fermenten (1946), Wasserstoffübertragende Fermente (1948), Mechanism of Photosynthesis (1951), Entstehung der Krebszellen (1955), and Weiterentwicklung der zellphysiologischen Methoden (1962). In the last years he added to the problems of his Institute: chemotherapeutics of cancer, and the mechanism of X-ray's action. In photosynthesis he discovered with Dean Burk the I-quantum reaction that splits the CO2, activated by the respiration.
Otto Warburg is a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, London (1934) and a member of the Academies of Berlin, Halle, Copenhagen, Rome, and India. He has gained l'Ordre pour le Mérite, the Great Cross, and the Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Bundesrepublik. In 1965 he was m

"The medicines of tomorrow will depend upon research being done today, for which animal experimentation is essential. Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982 Karl LANDSTEINER - discovers the main human ABO blood groups. Otto Heinrich WARBURG - discovers triphosphopyridine, Co-enzyme 1, essential in all tissues for respiration. Sir Charles Scott SHERRINGTON and Lord (Edgar Douglas) ADRIAN - show how nerves transmit their messages. Thomas Hunt MORGAN - shows that the chromosomes in the nuclei of cells transmit inherited features.

Biokémiai kutatások: Hans Adolf Krebs és Fritz Albert Lipmann
Orvosi-élettani Nobel-díj: 1953
A természettudósok, írók, és az emberiség békéjéért harcolók legmagasabb kitüntetése a Nobel-díj, melyet minden év decemberében, az alapító halálának évfordulóján adnak át Stockholmban. 1953-ban két biokémikus részesült a megtisztelõ elismerésben, egyikük Hans Adolf Krebs német származású amerikai biokémikus. Legjelentõsebb kutatási eredménye egy reakcióláncnak a leírása volt, amely a szénhidrát-, fehérje- és zsíranyagcsere köztes termékeinek általános, végsõ aerob lebomlását szemlélteti. Vizsgálatainak alapjait Szent-Györgyi Albert, a magyar Nobel-díjas tudós szerves savakra vonatkozó kutatásai képezték, ezért a felfedezett citrátkör, illetve citromsavciklus elnevezése is "Szent-Györgyi-Krebs körfolyamat" lett. 1953-ban a citromsavciklus felfedezéséért Krebs Nobel-díjat kapott, megosztva egy másik biokémia-tudóssal. Fritz Albert Lipmann (1899-1986) "A coenzim-A-nak és az intermedier-anyagcserében játszott szerepének felfedezéséért" indoklással részesült 1953-ban Nobel-díjban. Lipmann német egyetemeken tanulta az orvostudományt, Amszterdamban gyógyszertani ismereteket szerzett, kémiát pedig ismét Németországban tanult. Neves német kutatóintézetekben dolgozott, világhírû tudósok irányításával. 1942-tõl New Yorkban, majd Bostonban kutat, késõbb a Harvard Egyetem biokémia-professzora. Kiemelkedõ tevékenysége volt a "magas energiájú foszfátkötés" fogalmának bevezetése. Megállapította, hogy a sejtanyagcserében szrepet játszó adenozintrifoszfát (ATP) foszfátkötése magas energiát hordoz, s a kötés felbomlása energiát szolgáltat a biokémiai folyamatokhoz...

Our History This university was founded in 1810 during a short reformist period in Prussia after its defeat by Napoleon. It was felt then that physical loss and economic hardship can be countered by intellectual effort and integrity. The founding principles were consequently laid down by linguist, philosopher and statesman Wilhelm von Humboldt
  • Science is an open and forever unfinished effort, Detailed knowledge should always relate to a grander view of the matter and indeed of the world, Research and teaching are inseparable, Education through basic science will contribute more efficiently to the common welfare than specific training.

Franklin W(illiam) Stahl is a U.S. geneticist who, in 1958, (with Matthew Meselson) elucidated the mode of replication of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA; the gene substance) a double-stranded helix that dissociates to form two strands, each of which directs the construction of a new sister strand. They grew E. coli on media (food) that contained the heavier isotope of nitrogen-15 causing all of their DNA to be heavy. They switched the E. coli to media that contained normal nitrogen and then analyzed the DNA after each generation. After one generation, all of the DNA was medium-weight. Thus one strand of the double helix was heavy and one strand was light. After two generations, half of the DNA was medium-weight and half was normal light-weight DNA. [graphic source]

Born 8 Oct 1918
Danish biophysicist who (with Paul D. Boyer and John E. Walker) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1997 for his discovery of the enzyme called sodium-potassium-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na+-K+ ATPase). This enzyme, which is found in the plasma membrane of animal cells, maintains the balance of sodium and potassium ions in the living cell. Skou used as experimental material finely ground crab nerve membranes. The enzyme pumps sodium out of the cell and potassium into it, thereby maintaining a high intracellular concentration of potassium and a low concentration of sodium relative to the surrounding external environment. He was first to identify an enzyme that moves substances through cell membranes, a key function of all cells.
