AUGUST 1 - BIRTHS Douglas D. Osheroff Born 1 Aug 1945
American physicist who (with Douglas Osheroff and Robert Richardson) was the corecipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Physics for their discovery of superfluidity in the isotope helium-3. As helium is reduced in temperature toward almost absolute zero, a strange phase transition occurs, and the helium takes on the form of a superfluid. The atoms had until that point had moved with random speeds and directions. But as a superfluid, the atoms then move in a co-ordinated manner! Georges Charpak
(image)
Born 1 Aug 1924
Polish-born French physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1992 for his invention and development of subatomic particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber, a breakthrough in the technique for exploring the innermost parts of matter. As particle physicists have focussed their interest on very rare particle interactions, which often reveal the secrets of the inner parts of matter, sometimes only one particle interaction in a billion is the one searched for. Charpak replaced now inadequate photographic methods with used modern electronics that connected the detector directly to a computer. Walther Gerlach

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. ADDITIONAL LINKS By Stephen Holt MD Volume 1, Number PRESS RELEASE: Newark, NJ April 5, 2003 CORAL CALCIUM: THE HEALTH TOPIC ON THE MIND OF MORE THAN ONE MILLION US HEALTH CARE CONSUMERS.
CORAL CALCIUM FROM OKINAWA, JAPAN SWEEPS THE NATION.
Coral Calcium from Okinawa, Japan is the best selling dietary supplement in the entire history of the supplement Industry. Information on the health benefits of coral calcium has been the subject of comical, commercial dialogue on TV infomercials. Dr. Stephen Holt M.D., a highly respected physician and scientist is not tolerant of absurd treatment claims made about coral calcium. His new book confronts marketing predators who may say anything to sell coral calcium.
Much confusion prevails among consumer and health care givers about the origin and potential health benefits of coral calcium. Stephen Holt M.D., best selling author and physician from New York sorts facts from speculation on the subject of coral calcium in his new book "Natures Benefit from Coral Calcium", www.wellnesspublishing.com, 2003 which is now already in its 2nd edition.
Dr. Holt reports that Coral Calcium suffers from its own name. This supplement product is not just a calcium supplement. It is a source of up to 75 trace minerals, including calcium and it is derived primarily from the filtering of mineral rich sea water by living coral polyps that form stony coral reefs.
