Watson, James Dewey 1928-, American biologist and educator, b. Chicago, Ill., grad. Univ. of Chicago, 1947, Ph.D. Univ. of Indiana, 1950. With F. H. C. Crick he began (1951) research on the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge Univ. Their findings, published in 1953, resulted in the joint award to them and to M. H. F. Wilkins (on whose work in X-ray diffraction their studies were partly based) of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology. Since 1955, Watson has been on the faculty at Harvard. His chief researches have been in the fields of bacteriophage reproduction and bacterial genetics. See his The Double Helix (1968) and, with John Tooze, The DNA Story

JAMES WATSON Genetic Scientist Watson and fellow scientist Francis Crick were the first to describe the hidden double-helix structure of DNA molecules. The discovery was considered tremendously significant, and in 1962 Watson and Crick and their collaborator Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Later Watson was on the faculty of Harvard University for 21 years.

April 6, 1928 After spending his childhood in Chicago, James Dewey Watson received a tuition scholarship in 1943 to the University of Chicago. In 1947 he received his B.Sc. degree in Zoology at the young age of 19 and in 1950 received his Ph.D. degree in Zoology from Indiana University in Bloomington. His interest in genomics is said to have developed as a boy when he enjoyed bird watching. From 1950 to September 1951 James Watson spent his first postdoctoral year in Copenhagen as a Merck Fellow of the National Research Council and in 1952 he began to work at the Cavendish Laboratory. He soon met Francis Crick and discovered their interest in solving the DNA structure. After a first failed attempt to figure out the structure, their second effort based on more experimental evidence and better appreciation of the nucleic acid literature, resulted, early in March 1953, in the proposal of the complementary double-helical configuration. Crick (b. 1916) British Scientist and Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine (1962) Dramatic Autograph Letter Signed. One page, octavo, on his personal stationery, d. September 28th, 1980, San Diego, California. It reads in part: "I am not a Catholic—if anything I am an agnostic with atheistic leanings—so I certainly do not regard a human fetus as being ethically alive that destroying it would rank with taking the life of a mature human being. In addition such a fetus can have no knowledge that its life was taken and I do not believe it has a soul (in the sense that the soul is something that survives after death)… However there is another factor. The fetus hardly knows what is going on, but its parents do. So while it is foolish to worry about the feelings of the fetus, or its soul… it is not unreasonable to consider the parents feelings… if they differ, clearly some compromises must be sought…Francis Crick" . A letter with remarkable ethical content in which Crick conducts a debate about the morality of abortion and its consequences to both the unborn child and the parent. Handwritten letters by Crick are very rare. A rather amazing letter and difficult autograph to obtain. In fine condition. Unframed. Francis Harry Crompton Crick . Autograph Remarque Signed. Watson, James Dewey US biologist whose research on the molecular structure of DNA and the genetic code, in collaboration with Francis Crick , earned him a shared Nobel prize in 1962. Based on earlier works, they were able to show that DNA formed a double helix of two spiral strands held together by base pairs.
Crick and Watson published their work on the proposed structure of DNA in 1953, and explained how genetic information could be coded.
Watson was born in Chicago and studied there and at Indiana. He initially specialized in viruses but shifted to molecular biology and in 1951 he went to the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, where he performed the work on DNA with Crick. In 1953 Watson returned to the USA. He became professor at Harvard 1961 and director of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory of Quantitative Biology 1968, and was head of the US government's Human Genome Project 1989-92.
Crick and Watson envisaged DNA replication occurring by a parting of the two strands of the double helix, each organic base thus exposed linking with a nucleotide (from the free nucleotides within a cell) bearing the complementary base. Thus two complete DNA molecules would eventually be formed by this step-by-step linking of nucleotides, with each of the new DNA molecules comprising one strand from the original DNA and one new strand.
