Biographical Sketch of James Dewey Watson
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Archives After his tenure at Cambridge, Watson spent two years at the California Institute of Technology. He jointed the Harvard faculty in 1955 and became Professor in 1961. In 1968, while employed at Harvard, he became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Watson resigned from Harvard in 1976 to become full-time director of CSHL. Under his direction, the renowned but financially endangered institution was revitalized. Watson steered the laboratory into the field of tumor virology, from which emerged our present understanding of oncogenes (cancer genes) and the molecular basis of cancer. In 1994 he became president of CSHL. In 1988 Watson was appointed Associate Director for Human Genome Research of the National Institutes of Health and, in 1989, Director of the National Center for Human Genome Research at the NIH. In 1992, Watson resigned his position at NCHGR after successfully launching a worldwide effort to map and sequence the human genome. Dr. Watson has received honorary degrees from 32 universities and has published eight books:

British biophysicist Francis Crick and American geneticist James Watson undertook a joint inquiry into the structure of DNA in 1951. Geneticists already knew that DNA held the primary role in determining the structure and function of each cell in the body, but they did not understand the mechanism for this or that the structure of DNA was directly involved in the genetic process. Employing X-rays and molecular models, Watson and Crick discovered the double helix structure of DNA. Suddenly they could explain how the DNA molecule duplicates itself by forming a sister strand to complement each single, ladder-like DNA template. Watson and Crick's groundbreaking research paved the way for all of the major genetic discoveries of the last half-century. They received the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
