This week, an annual rite of fall took place. (No, not Columbus Day!) Early in the morning on Monday and Tuesday, several innocent, unassuming scientists were awoken by a telephone call from Sweden. And for a brief time after that call, those scientists enjoyed a little peace and quiet before the Nobel Prize winners were announced publicly, and a deluge of attention began. Gunter Blobel, a cell biologist at New York's Rockefeller University, was awarded the prize for Physiology or Medicine. His work focuses on working to understand cellular "trafficking" how proteins make their way through membranes surrounding the interior parts of a cell and how cells know where to deliver a protein within the cell. Blobel discovered that each protein contains a signal (often described as an "address" or a "ZIP code") that helps guide the protein across membranes - and that makes sure that proteins intended for the mitochondria doesn't get dropped off in the nucleus instead. His work is thought to have potential for helping treat diseases in which proteins don't get correctly handled by the body. We'll talk to him and find out more.

The Oskar Klein Memorial Lectures, instituted in 1988 and supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences through its Nobel Committee for Physics, are given at Stockholm University in Sweden, where Oskar Klein was professor in Theoretical Physics 1930-1962. Volume 1 contains the 1988 lectures on "Symmetry and Physics" and "From the Bethe-Hulthén Hypothesis to the Yang-Baxter Equation," given by C N Yang , Nobel Prize winner (1957) and professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The 1989 lectures on "Beyond the Standard Models," referring to models for cosmology and elementary particles, and on "Precision Tests of Quantum Mechanics'' were given by Steven Weinberg , Nobel Prize winner (1979) and professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The volume also contains translations of some of Klein's original papers, one on intermediate charged fields (original in French, 1938), another on five-dimensional quantum theory ("Kaluza-Klein theory," original in German, 1926). A scientific biography of Klein, written by Professors I. Fischer-Hjalmars and B Laurent, who both knew Klein well, is included as well as an autobiography by Klein.

Dr. Steven Weinberg is one of the true, authentic, Renaissance men of our time. He has been called the "Einstein" of our day. He won the Nobel Prize for uniting the electromagnetic and the weak nuclear forces into a single force. He is a founding director of the Jerusalem Winter School of Theoretical Physics, is on the Council of Scholars, the Library of Congress, and he holds honorary doctoral degrees from major universities all over the world. He taught at MIT and Harvard. Nobody since Loren Eiseley and Lewis Thomas has written so beautifully turning science into poetry. He recently was awarded the Lewis Thomas prize, given to the scholar who "best embodies the scientist as poet." He prefaced his acceptance speech by saying, "What a joy to be at a meeting that doesn't start with an invocation." He went on to say that the great passion of his life, with science, is to free human beings from the superstition of religion, and he continued:
"Religion is an insult to human dignity. Science should be taught ignoring religion. One of the social functions of science is to free humans from superstition."

LEWISTON, Maine, May 29, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In a commencement speech delivered May 27, Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg told graduating Bates College students that those "who try to ban research on therapeutic cloning" are "religious zealots" and in the same lot with those who "bomb abortion clinics." Weinberg asked student to join him in the continuation of the movement known as "the Enlightenment."
"Even here in America we have religious zealots who try to corrupt the teaching of biological and astronomic science in public schools, who try to ban research on therapeutic cloning, who try to prevent building astronomical observatories on the top of mountains that some people think are sacred, and who in extreme cases, bomb abortion clinics," he said. Weinberg, was winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics and currently a theoretical physicist at the University of Texas, also compared those opposed to the Enlightenment with Islamic fundamentalism. "With a few exceptions like Turkey, the governments of Islamic countries have generally not accepted the separation of state and religion or the equality of men and women."

As Plane Crashes into N.Y., Bush Prepares to Meet Putin, Nobel Prizewinners Tell Congress Missile Defense Targets Wrong Threat WASHINGTON - November 12 - A letter was delivered to House and Senate leaders this morning, signed by 50 American Nobel laureates, urging Congress not to fund or build missile defense because it will squander resources needed to protect Americans against terrorism. As President Bush prepares to discuss with Russian President Putin a deal that would allow the U.S. to build missile defenses, and just as news broke of a commercial airliner crashing into Queens, New York, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg released the letter at a Washington press conference sponsored by the Federation of American Scientists. The letter argues missile defense fails to address the real threats facing Americans. Weinberg spearheaded the Nobel laureates' letter together with Hans Bethe. "The tragic events of September 11 eliminated any doubt that America faces security needs far more substantial than a technically improbable defense against a strategically improbable Third World ballistic missile attack," the letter states. "Devoting massive effort and expense to countering the least probable and least effective threat would be unwise."

Mario Livio, a cosmologist and art aficionado at the Hubble Space Telescope Center and the author of the previous book "The Accelerating Universe," wrote a lot about the irrational (never-ending, never-repeating) number phi, or the Golden Ratio, whose value is 1.6180339877... The story starts from these questions: Who discovered the Golden Ratio? Was phi used in the design of a Babylonian stela and Egyptian pyramids? The author pursues the answers to these questions, writing a series of his thoughts like a detective story. Then he describes the role of the Greek mathematicians Plato and Euclid, and the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci in the history of phi, together with the geometrical and arithmetical wonders connected to this number. One example of the wonders is the relation between the Fibonacci sequence and phi. The Fibonacci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ... is defined as a series of numbers in which each term is the sum of the two preceding terms. The ratio of successive numbers of this sequence approaches phi as we go farther and farther down the sequence.

According to this Nobel laureate, what physicists are discovering through science is "an impersonal world governed by mathematical laws that are not particularly concerned with human beings, in which human beings appear as a chance phenomena." But if Weinberg interprets the mathematical "laws of nature" as having nothing to do with human beings, others have a different interpretation. An increasing number of physicists see these very laws as "finely tuned" to allow for the emergence of life. This view is known as the " anthropic principle ". (Anthropic Principle: Only a small range of possible values for the universal constants (such as the mass of an electron) are consistent with the presence of life as we know it. The significance of such apparent fine-tuning of the universal constants is disputed by those who regard it as trivial and those who argue from it to the necessity of life in the universe.)

What do you think of this association being made? DR. WEINBERG: It makes me nervous when physicists use the word "God" loosely, as talking about the laws of nature as the mind of God, or even Einstein 's famous remarks about God playing dice with the cosmos . I think mostly they're just using the word "God" in the metaphorical sense. By "God" most of them simply mean the laws of nature, the principles that govern everything. And, well, there's nothing wrong with the metaphor, I suppose, but the word "God" is charged with so much meaning, it carries so much historical freight, and I think one ought to be careful about how one uses it.
