Thomas Huckle Weller was born at Ann Arbor, Michigan, on June 15th, 1915. He was educated at the public schools there, and later at the University of Michigan , where his father, Carl Vernon Weller had an appointment in the Pathology Department of the Medical School. Entering this University in 1932, T. H. Weller graduated in 1936, taking the A.B. degree. Early in life he had shown an interest in natural history, and this no doubt influenced him during his University life in the direction of medical zoology. He was also influenced in this direction by Professors G. R. LaRue, and A. E. Woodhead and, after his graduation, he worked for two summers at the University of Michigan Biological Station under Professors L. J. Thomas and W. W. Cort on the parasites of fish. In 1937 he was awarded the M.S. degree for this work.
In 1936, however, he had entered the

T HOMAS H UCKLE W ELLER Weller, Thomas Huckle (1915- ), American virologist, whose techniques for growing viruses in laboratory cell cultures helped revolutionise research on viruses in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Weller is best known for assisting in the first successful effort to grow the virus causing poliomyelitis . For his work, he received the 1954 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, which he shared with American biologists John Franklin Enders and Frederick Chapman Robbins In the 1940s Weller and his colleagues at Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, attempted to grow the polio virus. In 1948, due largely to cell-culture methods refined by Weller, the Children's Hospital laboratory team succeeded in growing polio in human cells that were not derived from the nervous system . By using penicillin and other antibiotics , Weller and his colleagues prevented cell cultures from being overgrown by bacteria . This cell-culture technique provided the foundation for the development of the first polio vaccine in 1953. The advancements made by Weller and his collaborators also accelerated research into many other types of viruses. Researchers could investigate viruses much more quickly and conveniently in laboratory cultures rather than relying on experimental animals. Thomas Huckle Weller Trichirella spiralis and also to that on the schistosome trematodes which cause schistosomiasis of man, his contributions including methods of cultivating the schistosomes

Weller, Thomas H.,
in full THOMAS HUCKLE WELLER (b. June 15, 1915, Ann Arbor, Mich., U.S.), American physician and virologist who was the corecipient (with John Enders and Frederick Robbins ) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1954 for the successful cultivation of poliomyelitis virus in tissue cultures. This made it possible to study the virus "in the test tube"a procedure that led to the development of polio vaccines. After his education at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (A.B., 1936; M.S., 1937) and Harvard University (M.D., 1940), Weller became a teaching fellow at the Harvard Medical School (1940-42) and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was appointed assistant director of Enders' infectious diseases laboratory at the Children's Medical Center, Boston (1949-55), and, working with Enders and Robbins, soon achieved the propagation of poliomyelitis virus in laboratory suspensions of human embryonic skin and muscle tissue. He was also the first (with the American physician Franklin Neva) to achieve the laboratory propagation of rubella (German measles) virus and to isolate chicken pox virus from human cell cultures. Weller became professor of tropical public health at Harvard University in 1954 and from 1966 to 1981 served also as director of the Center for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Harvard University School of Public Health.
