The Hooper Foundation by Joseph LaDou, M.D. The Hooper Foundation was the first medical research foundation The Hooper Foundation in the United States incorporated into a university. On Commencement Day, May 14, 1913, Mrs. Sophronia Hooper transferred to the Regents of the University of California certain valuable property to serve as a foundation for an institute of medical research. The institute endowed in memory of her husband, George Williams Hooper, San Francisco lumber merchant and philanthropist, was formally opened on March 7, 1914. Later, the entire Hooper estate became an endowment for the administration of the Hooper Foundation.
The Declaration of Trust stated:
"The George Williams Hooper Foundation, which shall be conducted and maintained in San Francsico, California and shall be managed as a department of the University of California." . . . . "The net income of the Endowment Fund shall be extended in the maintenance and conduct of said School of Medical Research which shall conduct and carry on investigations in the sciences and arts of hygiene, medicine and surgey; also in the nature and cause of diseases and in the methods of its prevention and treatment, and shall disseminate gratuitously all knowledge so acquired."
The first Director, George Hoyt Whipple, was recruited from Johns Hopkins Medical School by UC President Benjamin Ide Wheeler and UC medical dean Herbert C. Moffitt. Whipple was well known for his studies of liver metabolism and the relationship of the liver to blood formation. His work, done in part at the Hooper Foundation, led to award of the Nobel Prize along with George Minot and William P. Murphy in 1934. The three investigators established that a substance in liver would cure pernicious anemia.

Unique Medical and Surgical Firsts in San Francisco
Harry J. Buncke, MD, Frank H. Leeds, MD, Arthur E. Lyons, MD and Anne Shew, MLS
This list was compiled as a tribute to and in honor of Dr. Paul Scholten, who served for many years as historian of the San Francisco Medical Society. He was instrumental in helping the authors prepare a talk on "Innovative Surgeries and Technology" for the 130th anniversary celebration of the founding of the San Francisco Medical Society on October 29, 1998, chaired by Dr. Wade M. Aubry. The authors have attempted to confirm each event with an acceptable reference or personal contact with a reliable source. Drs. Charles B. Wilson, William F. Heer, (Dil) Cannon Jr., and David Lowenberg were also kind enough to review the final list.

Nobel goes to alumnus Steven Chu
Rochester alumnus Steven Chu '70 has been named co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics. Chu, along with William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, was cited for developing novel ways to cool atoms to super-low temperatures with laser light. The work allows researchers to manipulate matter at a temperature that was previously unattainable, and raises the possibility of technologies based in the subatomic realm of quantum physics. "The new methods of investigation that the Nobel laureates have developed have contributed greatly to increasing our knowledge of the interplay between radiation and matter," the citation from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. The work, the citation added, "may lead to the design of more-precise atomic clocks for use in space navigation and accurate determination of position." A double major at Rochester, Chu graduated in 1970 with a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in mathematics. He went on to earn his Ph.D. at Berkeley and is now professor of physics at Stanford. Chu becomes the seventh Nobel laureate to have studied or taught at Rochester. The others: chemist Vincent du Vigneaud '27M (Ph.D.); medical researchers Arthur Kornberg '41M (MD) and Carleton Gajdusek '42; and faculty members George Hoyt Whipple, founding dean of the medical school; biochemist Henrik Dam, at the medical school in the 1940s; and economist Robert Fogel, on the economics faculty during the '60s and '70s.

Back to the Future
The Medical Center's First 75 Years
In 1925, a model medical school opened at the University of Rochesterthe first to be created from the bottom up for the express purpose of combining first-class teaching and first-class research. Now in 2000, as the University observes its Sesquicentennial year, Rochester's Medical Center joins in with a celebration of its own 75th anniversary. Following are a few of the highlights marking the center's progress from a gleam in the eye of two far-sighted philanthropists to the distinguished place the University of Rochester Medical Center holds today.
Founding fathers: Rhees, Flexner, Eastman, Whipple
