American oceanographer who is a devout advocate of public education regarding the importance of the oceans as an essential environmental habitat. In 1990, Earle was named the first woman to serve as chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the agency that conducts underwater research, manages fisheries, and monitors marine spills. She was among the first underwater explorers to make use of modern self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) gear, and identified many new species of marine life. With her former husband, Graham Hawkes, Earle designed and built a submersible craft that could dive to unprecedented depths of 3,000 feet. E.M. Purcell Born 30 Aug 1912; died 7 Mar 1997.
American physicist who shared, with Felix Bloch of the United States, the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1952 for his independent discovery (1946) of nuclear magnetic resonance in liquids and in solids. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has become widely used to study the molecular structure of pure materials and the composition of mixtures. The method detects and measures the magnetic fields of atomic nuclei. John W. Mauchly

Living Studying Research Facts and Figures Institutions of higher education (3) Research institutes (1) The university library Studying in Würzburg Nobel Prize without a School leaving Certificate Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was expelled from school for drawing a caricature of his teacher on the blackboard, shortly before his final school leaving certificate exam. The poor student wanted to at least pass a private school leaving certificate exam. But as luck would have it, the same teacher, who he had caricatured, appeared to assess his papers, and promptly failed him. Who would have ever imagined that a person, who began his academic career on such a unfortunate note, would one day receive the highest academic honor that there is? Wilhelm Conrad could luckily study in Zürich, even without a school leaving certificate. He made his phenomenal discovery while he was a professor at the university in Würzburg: in 1895, he discovered the x-rays that are named after him. He was the first to receive a Nobel Prize for Physics. curriculum was expanded to include a law and medical faculty. Famous physicians such as Döllinger, Schoenlein, von Koelliker, von Virchow and the Siebold family made the university famous.

Nobel Prizewinners From Röntgen to Klitzing - Nobel Prizewinners of the University of Würzburg Dr. Gabriele Geibig-Wagner
The author, who was born in 1956, studied
History of Contemporary German Literature, Old High German, Middle High German and Musicology at the University of Würzburg. After graduation, some practical work experience and a period overseas in which she worked as a lector, she completed a doctorate in 1990 with a thesis on "Literary Portraits in the Autobiography of Elias Canetti". She then spent two years as a research assistant in Würzburg's City Archives. There she opened and catalogued the unpublished works of Würzburg poet Maximilian Dauthendey (1867-1918) and worked on his biography and an exhibition of his life and works. She has been employed in the Press and Public Relations Department of the Julius Maximilian University in Würzburg since January 1993. S ince Alfred Nobel instructed in his will that a Foundation be established and that five prizes be awarded annually, four physicists and two chemists from the University of Würzburg have received this coveted prize. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century the Würzburg School of Science gained the highest honour when in 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered the rays that now bear his name and won the first Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901. His successors in office, Wilhelm Wien and Johannes Stark received the prize in 1911 and 1919, the chemists Emil Fischer and Eduard Buchner won it in 1902 and 1907. Klaus von Klitzing followed in his famous predecessors’ footsteps in 1985 - also in the field of Physics.
